Kelly Clarkson Forgot the 22nd Anniversary of Her American Idol Win: 'Didn't Even Realize What Day It Was'

Kelly Clarkson has a lot more on her plate these days than when she won american idol in 2002.

The “Miss Independent” singer, 42, won the debut season of the hit reality singing competition 22 years ago on September 4, when an employee named Andy from The Kelly Clarkson Show in a hilarious video.

“Hey Kel, it’s September 4th,” Clarkson’s co-star said in the clip, shared on the NBC series’ social media.

– Today is September 4 – answered the Grammy winner nonchalantly.

“22 years ago today…” Andy continued before Clarkson burst into laughter.

“Oh my God,” she said. “When you said that date, I got the jitters, like, ‘Did I miss the anniversary?’ I am!”

“22 years since the victory american idol,” Clarkson mused. “You know what? And I’m back on TV. Who would have thought?”

The “Since U Been Gone” singer admitted the “exciting” moment before explaining why she “forgot” about the anniversary. “I didn’t even realize what day it is. I’m worried about my children’s first day of school, which is tomorrow,” she said.

Clarkson previously referred to her american idol win by a length around the 20th anniversary milestone in 2022, writing on Instagram that the triumph “changed the course of my life forever.”

“That moment was a door that opened so many approaches and opportunities, and creative partnerships that I will be grateful for the rest of my life,” she continued. “The family and friendships I’ve made over these 20 years in music and television are priceless to me.”

Clarkson added: “We only have so many trips around the sun and while I’m proud and feel abundantly blessed by the successes and failures I’ve learned from, I’m most proud and grateful for those friends who have become family, and their hands that held me when I needed that and their hearts that listened to me when I felt lost.”

“Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am. I probably wouldn’t be here at all,” she said at the time.
