Kelly Ripa Says Mark Consuelos Used to Give Her Gym Memberships as Christmas Presents: ‘It Was Good for Me’

Some husbands give their wives jewelry for Christmas. Mark Consuelos? He left with a gym membership.

On Tuesday in the episode Living with Kelly and Mark, Kelly Ripa recalled how Consuelos signed up for her at the Reebok Sports Club in New York and gave it to her as a holiday gift.

“I feel like in the beginning of our relationship you bought me a gym membership every year … And every year I didn’t use it,” Ripa told her husband. “And then Christmas would come and you’d get me a gym membership!”

It got to the point where Ripa began questioning Consuelos’ motivations. “One day, one of my girlfriends said, ‘Maybe he’s trying to tell you something?’ And then it dawned on me: ‘Oh, well, he’s trying to tell me something!’ ”

But Consuelos insisted his intentions were pure. “No, it’s a way of life. It’s a lifestyle!” He said.

And Ripa agreed. “You’re right,” she said, “It felt good. I’m glad you stuck with it.”

Ripa (53) and Consuelos (52) have been married for 27 years. The couple eloped in May 1996, just a year after meeting on the soap All My Children.

Last year, the couple – who have three grown children: Michael, 26, Lola, 22, and Joaquin, 20 – became collaborators again when Consuelos joined Live as co-host in April, taking over for Ryan Seacrest who left the series after 6 years.

Since then, the two regularly use the “host talk” segment of the daily morning show to discuss their marriage and family life. They were even the hosts Livethe annual Christmas show of sweaters in one big joined dress.

“I feel like I’m meeting a brand new you here,” Ripa joked before grabbing her husband under her sweater. “Mark and I are very compatible as a couple, apart from what we’ve discovered, when it comes to wearing sweaters for two people.”

“I don’t know, I feel kind of great,” Consuelos replied with a laugh.

As for their feelings on fitness, Consuelos has openly shared his love for the gym, regularly posting photos of his workouts on his Instagram page.

His wife has been a little more private about her exercise routine, but told PEOPLE in 2015 that she rarely misses a trip to the gym. “There are a lot of people who don’t need to exercise and I’m very happy for them, but I have to exercise for my body type,” she said. “It’s part of my routine. It’s part of my ritual. It doesn’t just make me look better, it makes me feel better emotionally.”

In that time, Let’s talk in front of the camera The host said she enjoyed the mix of activities, including an AKT dance-cardio class, SoulCycle and running.

“I love dance class,” she said. “Because I think I’ve stopped clubbing, it’s actually my nightclub. Everyone there is my age, so it’s like a bunch of us old ladies working out.”
