Kenny Chesney Is Bound for the Country Music Hall of Fame: 'I Did Not See This Coming'

Kenny Chesney has lived big dreams in his historic career, but the one who says he even has not dare to dream of now truly stands out: He goes to the house of famous country music!

“I promise you, I didn’t see that this was coming,” said the 56-year-old superstar to the audience only for an invitation of about 200, which gathered on Tuesday morning at the Nashville Famed Rotund House at a public announcement.

Standing in the midst of the plaques of her heroes, Chesney reminded herself in a short speech about the day his dreams began as a boy who grew up in the eastern tennessee.

Chesney pulled the wounds of the main steps – learning guitar, playing in a Bluegrass band on college, moving to Nashville and signing a publishing contract, and eventually a record job – before his career went to his stratospheric height. Praise includes 23 singles on the ladder, 16 platinum albums and four CMA Enterainer of the Year awards, and he continues to fulfill the stadium as the titular captain of his Nation No Shoes.

Chesney noted with particular pride that he would join three more East tennesses in Hall of Fame, guitarist-Producent Chet Atkins, Country ICon Dolly Parton and songwriter Dean Dillon.

“My grandparents lived on the same street where Chet Atkins grew up,” he said. “I rode the bike next to that property all the time. To know that I was entering Dolly Parton for me is a huge job … And also, I don’t have a brother in my life, but if I did, that would be Dean Dillon. Dean Dillon and I wrote a lot of songs. I sought that Dean all my creative life.”

Chesney has been living with news of this top honor for weeks, but obviously a public announcement has finally given the moment when she could completely absorb her.

“I know it’s not a dream,” he said. “It’s real and feels so real.”

June Carter Cash, two surviving children, Carlene Carter, 69, and John Carter Cash, 55, appeared in an announcement to accept the honor of their mother, who died in 2003 (daughter of Rosie “Rosie” Nix Adams died six months after her mother, from accidental carbon poisoning.

Obviously thanked by acknowledgment, both siblings said it was a long time late – a feeling without a doubt shared by millions of fans in the country.

Gill praised Brown, a longtime friend, mentor and associate, noticing his role in the progress of his own career, as well as other members of the Hall of Fame, including Wynonnna Judd, Patty Loveless, Reba Mcentire, George Strait and Marty Stuart.

“I had other great things in my life, in my career,” Brown said in his remarks. “This is the biggest … This is better than money. You bring records and make some money. But this is better than money. This is an influence, and when it all comes down to that, that’s why we all get into this job.”

Chesney, Carter Cash and Brown will formally be introduced into the celebrity house in the ceremony in October.
