Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindor talk about getting out of prison

Screen Rant: Despite the tension between Edwin and Paige, it feels like the two of you are truly in love. Kerry, how easy are you to tease each other?

Kerry Washington: I’ve loved Delroy for many, many years. Love him from afar despite not having a real relationship with them. Every step of the way, I’m grateful that Delroy agreed, because it’s a very special process. It’s been an honor to be able to tell this story and bring these characters to life, and to be able to do so with our other talented cast and team of writers. It really feels like a privilege.

This is such an important family; Their stories are so important and pivotal to what kind of nation we are as a nation. There are 80 million Americans with criminal records and we don’t tell enough of their stories. I’m glad we’re starting to bring this part of our culture to the fore.

Delroy, just as Edwin got a second chance with his daughter, he got a first chance with his grandson. Can you talk about being a father to Finn and learn from him?

Delroy Lindo: Yes, I learned from him. That’s a great way to say it, because I learned from him. Faly is very open and very present as an actor. Although I don’t think that way now, I say it now in the context of the interview. I wouldn’t think about it at work, but when you’re working with an actor who is present, open and vulnerable — you’re better off working in an energy-boosting way.

For Finn and Faly, this happened. It evolved as our relationship developed through eight episodes. In the course of doing this work, our relationship has grown. I sent it to Foley. I actually called him about a month after we finished because he did something [toward] End – undisclosed. He did something in a later scene that totally blew me away, and I couldn’t bear to say to him, “Do it again,” because it excites me. I think it scared me in a way – I’m no psychologist, but maybe it scared me. This is real. It’s really exhaustive, including accumulating his powers as an actor.

Kerry Washington: Just incredible talent and instincts. And, watching him bloom this season is truly breathtaking.

Delroy Lindo: Sure. You talk about chemistry, I say [it was in] Our first scene. In television and movies, people don’t work in chronological order. Our first scene together is not the first in the story; our scene dancing together. But chemistry; the connection is there. it’s there. It’s not like I say, “Oh, we have a chemical reaction,” we’re just in there. We did it and it felt energizing and it felt great. It feels energizing, it feels rich, and it works from the start.
