Kevin Costner Admits First Horizon Movie 'Didn't Have Overwhelming Success' but Trusts It Will Stand 'the Test of Time'

Kevin Costner speaks frankly about his Horizon film series.

On Saturday, September 7, the 69-year-old actor spoke to reporters at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where he discussed the world premiere of his new film, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2and why its original August 16th release date was pushed back.

Costner explained that the decision to delay the release of the second film came down to performance Chapter 1which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and was released in theaters on June 28.

“He didn’t have incredible success,” he said, per Diversitybefore remarking, “I’ve had many films like that that have stood the test of time.”

Costner went on to explain that the studio behind the film made the “decision” to release it Chapter 2 six weeks after the release of the first film, before they backed off and decided “not” to release it on August 16th.

The actor’s company, Territory Pictures, and distributor, New Line Cinema, announced that they are changing their strategy to release the second film on July 10.

Still, Costner noted that he’s happy things turned out the way they did.

“For me, it fell back into my schedule, which is that I always wanted to come out with films five to six months apart. And that would allow me to come to Venice,” said the actor, according to the report Diversity. “I would never come to Venice, because they won’t show a film here if it’s already out.”

Costner added that Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera was “the biggest reason” they were able to screen the project at the Venice Film Festival, and praised him for “bringing this here.”

“… [He] he gave me my dream and didn’t let it get trampled on,” Costner said. “F—, Venice saves me all the time!”

On July 31, Costner wrote on Instagram that it was the festival’s decision to host another Horizon premiering the film and screening the first film earlier that day “shows not only their faith in how the two films work together, but also their support for the director’s vision.”

“I am indebted to Alberto Barbera for his courage and leadership in committing to this cinematic journey. It is with gratitude and excitement that I return to the Venice Film Festival,” he wrote at the time. “Long live the movies and those who are ready to defend them.”

In addition to Costner, the cast also includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt and Jamie Campbell Bower. in a large ensemble over his two Horizon movies.

The two-time Oscar winner additionally said in Cannes in May that he is actively filming the third part of the series.
