Kevin Costner and Jewel’s newlywed relationship is built on mutual attraction.
The actor, 68, and the singer/songwriter, 49, sparked romance rumors when photos emerged of the two kissing side-by-side at a tennis fundraiser for her Inspiring Children Foundation held on Richard Branson’s Necker Island in British Virgin Islands.
An entertainment source tells PEOPLE, “The relationship between Kevin and Jewel is fresh, but it’s not brand new. Both parties are very attracted to each other.”
A source says Jewel is independent and doesn’t like relationships for the sake of relationships.
“Jewel likes Kevin’s guy and Kevin likes being in a relationship, so this is cool,” says the source. “He’s having fun after a contentious divorce. He’s glad it’s over.”
Reps for Costner and Jewel did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

Jewel fans call out her ‘hot’ swimsuit moment amid Kevin Costner romance rumors
When Jewel posted about the fundraiser on Instagram on Nov. 28, she mentioned Costner’s involvement.
“Every year my foundation @inspiringchildren and I go to Necker Island to help organize a tennis event with @richardbranson to raise funds for our kids,” she wrote. “Amazing players like @geniebouchard come and support us playing doubles with people coming… it’s an amazing time and I’m using it to relax, rest and play with my son!”
She added, “@kevincostnermodernwest was kind enough to mentor our kids this year and Sir Richard was his usual inspirational self – who also plays a wicked doubles game!”
Jewel is mother to son Kase, 12, whom she shares with ex-husband Ty Murray.

Costner’s ex-wife Christine filed for divorce earlier this year, and the couple reached a settlement in September. They have three children – Cayden, 16, Hayes, 14, and Grace, 13 – and he has four grown children from previous relationships.
In early November, after rumors of a romance between Costner and Reese Witherspoon surfaced online, Witherspoon’s rep denied the claims, saying, “This story is completely fabricated and not true.”
