Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates: All About the Actors’ Decades-Long Marriage

It wasn’t love at first sight for actors Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline, but their fateful first meeting lead to more than 30 years of marriage.

The couple met at an audition in 1982 and married seven years later. They welcomed two children, raising them at their home base in New York.

However, Kline initially doubted their compatibility. “When I first met Phoebe, I remember thinking, ‘She’s too happy to be with me,'” the actor said. Entertainment Weekly 2002. “’She is too enthusiastic about life. …. What are we going to talk about?’ ”

While Kline and Cates keep their romance pretty private — and Cates herself has largely retired from acting — they remain one of Hollywood’s favorite couples.

They met at an audition

Cates, who is fresh off the success of the cult teen comedy Fast times at Ridgemont High, met classically trained theater actor Kline at a reading for the film Great cold In 1982, Cates was not selected, but Kline was, and the role became one of his most famous. Their paths would cross again a few years later at the New York Public Theater, where both actors worked on different projects. They started dating shortly after.

Kline was 41 when they married and Cates was 25, as Kline discussed in a 2014 interview. Guard. “I was 40 when I finally stopped being obsessed with acting and thought it would be nice to have a life and actually got married,” he explained. “If I had married someone my own age, the possibility of offspring would have been very slim. I didn’t consciously say, ‘Hey, we could have kids; do you want to get married?’ It just happened that way.”

They have two children

The couple’s first child, Owen Joseph, was born in 1991. A daughter, Greta Simone, followed in 1994, and Cates put her career on hold to raise her children.

“We agreed to take turns never working at the same time,” Kline said in 1998. “Whenever she had time to work, Phoebe chose to stay with the kids.” Kline said he prefers to work, but he admired the fact that his wife was happy to step away from the spotlight. “That was one of the many things I loved about her,” he explained. “She loved acting while she was doing it, but she wasn’t driven by it like I was.”

Today, Greta is a member of the band Frankie Cosmos, and Owen works in the film industry; he also acted in 2005 Squid and whale. “One of the good things about having your parents in this business is that there’s no mystique in show business,” Kline said of his children’s Hollywood pedigree.

The family may be busy with their own projects, but they see each other often. “We all have dinner together at least once a week,” Kline said of their weekly ritual. “The children did not banish us from their lives.”

Despite their public careers, Kline and Cates live relatively modest lives in New York. They’ve occasionally been photographed together at premieres, award shows (including the Tonys and Oscars) and basketball games, but they’ve mostly kept their relationship out of the spotlight.
