Kevin Smith has revealed that his mother Grace has been hospitalized and is recovering from “life-saving surgery”.
On September 4, the director posted a photo on Instagram with his mom as she gives the thumbs up from her hospital bed. The 54-year-old shared a health update, praising her for getting through a medical emergency at her age.
“On Monday I visited my mom who is recovering from life-saving surgery,” he wrote. “Mom has been in and out of hospitals for a whole year now and as hard as it was to see it, it was much harder for mom to live through it. He’ll be 79 in December, so the recovery from the surgery takes almost as much toll as the disease they’re treating.”
“I love my mom as much as any other man, but I also respect her because she’s the strongest person I know,” he continued. “If I faced what mom is going through, I would probably be done. But not Amazing Grace. He fights for his life every time. It’s quite inspiring. And while, admittedly, mom would love for me not to swear to express that sentiment, sometimes you just have to drop the F bomb to emphasize how much you love your heroes.”
Smith ended the heartfelt post by thanking all the doctors and health professionals who cared for his mother during her hospital stay.

Back in 2016, Smith also opened up to fans about his health issues, sharing on Facebook that he “almost lost her.”
He explained that his mother, then 70 years old, had been struggling with “a hiatal hernia for almost a year or more.” Doctors were hesitant to operate because of her age, but when complications arose, she was told she would die without the procedure. “Doc said if she had come to the hospital an hour later, we would have lost her,” he wrote at the time.
“She’s lucky to be alive – which is one of the many reasons we call her Amazing Grace (also because she pushed my fat ass out of her body 45 years ago). I love you, mom! Thanks for sticking with me, Don and Virginia – because we grown children are not ready to face the world alone without you!” he continued. “My advice: if your mom is still here, go give her a hug or call her right away. It will make your mom’s day when her Missing Piece calls.”
