Khushbu Sundar is a famous South Indian actress, film producer and television host who joined Indian politics in 2010. She has acted in more than 200 Indian films. Khushbu has received three Tamil Nadu National Film Awards, including the Kalamamani Award from the Tamil Nadu government in recognition of her outstanding contribution to cinema. She also won the Kerala State Film Award in 2006.

Khushbu started working in Hindi films in 1978 as a child artist. Nakhat became Khushbu on the sets of her first film “Burning Train”, in which she sang the song “Teri Hai Zameen”. She talked about changing her name in an interview,
Everyone asks me what my name means. It is an Urdu name meaning perfume, or Khushbu in Hindi. So I became Khushboo. “
Soon, Khushbu Sundar appeared as a child actor in several Hindi films, including Naseeb (1997), Laawaris (1981), Kaalia (1981), Dard Ka Rishta and Bemisal (1982).
In 1982, Khushbu became a popular child artist after performing the fairy tale song “Main Pariyon Ki Shehzaadi” from the film Dard Ka Rishta. The song was an instant hit and remains popular at annual school functions and family children’s gatherings.
In 1985, Khushbu appeared in the movie Meri Jung opposite Javed Jaffrey in the song “Bol Baby Bol, Rock n Roll”. In the same year, Khushboo made her silver screen debut as the female lead in the film Jaanoo, opposite Jackie Shroff.
In 1986, she starred opposite Govinda in the film “Tan-Badan”. Soon, she was seen in a supporting role in the film Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin alongside Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit. In the film, Khushbu appeared in a solo song, which became a huge hit and is still played widely at several wedding ceremonies in India.
Khushbu acted mainly in South Indian films after writing the final script for the Hindi film Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin. She has been living in Chennai since then. She made her acting debut in the 1986 Telugu film “Kaliyuga Pandavulu” opposite Telugu actor Venkatesh. Soon, she started signing Tamil films as well. Since then, she has acted in more than 150 South Indian films. Khushbu Sundar has been romantically linked to several South Indian actors, including Kamal Hassan, Rajinikanth, Tiger Prabhakar, Ravichandran, Suresh Gopi, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Chiranjeevi, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh. Khushbu has done more than 100 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu languages. Uncle Bun (1991), Vrudhanmare Sookshikkuka (1995), Independence (1999), Manathe Kottaram (1994), Kaiyoppu (2007) and Mr Marumakan (2012) are some of her famous Malayalam films. Ranadheera (1987), Anjada Gandu (1988), Shanthi Kranthi (1991), Yugapurusha (1989), Gagana (1989), Aunty Preetse (2001) and Jeevanadhi (1996) are some of her famous Kannada films. In Telugu films, Khushbu Sundar has mainly worked with South Indian actors Venkatesh and Nagarjuna. In May 2010, Khushbu joined the Indian political party DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazagam), leaving her brilliant career in the South Indian film industry. DMK leader Karunanidhi welcomed Khushbu Sundar at his party’s headquarters in Chennai.
Kushbu quit the DMK on June 16, 2014, and joined the Indian National Congress on November 26, 2014. She was designated as the national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress on the day she joined. Khushboo exclaimed when he joined INC:
This is the happiest moment of my life. I feel like I’m at home. I am proud to join the Congress because it is a secular party. I will work for the good of the country and not just for Tamil Nadu. “
Khushbu Sundar quit the Indian National Congress on October 12, 2020. Sundar joined the BJP on the same day. She resigned from INC ahead of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. In Chennai, she is contesting from Thousand Lights constituency. However, Khushbu lost to DMK party’s Ezhilan N by a margin of 32,200 votes. Ezhilan N won the poll with 52.87%.

- In 2005, Kushboo caused controversy when he made a public statement that girls could indulge in premarital sex, but only if pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases were prevented. She further said that after marriage, no educated Indian man would expect his spouse to be just a virgin. After Khushboo Sundar made this statement, the South Indian Film Artists Association’s office was pulled down by the Dalit Black Panther of India. Activists protested against her and demanded an apology. The Pattali Makkal Katchi party also sat in front of Khushbu’s house to protest against her statement. Later, more than 22 complaints were filed against her, accusing her of “defaming Tamil women and chastity”. In 2010, the Supreme Court of India dismissed all cases against Khushbu Sundar.
- In January 2006, Khushbu Sundar filed two complaints against Maxim magazine because the magazine featured a model in a bikini with her head plastered to her body on the cover. The complaint was made against the magazine’s editor and four of his colleagues. The two cases were – Defamation and Indecent Representation of Women. The case was pending before the Madras High Court until December 2007, until any of the defendants entered a plea.
- In December 2012, Kushboo wore a sari with images of Hindu gods, namely Rama, Krishna and Hanuman. Soon after the incident, her photos went viral in the media. Hindu Makkal Katchi, a political party in Tamil Nadu, demanded an apology from her. Khushbu replied to Hindu Makkal Katchi and said:
I’m not going to answer every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Why should I? It’s simply not necessary. Why are they worried about the content of women’s sports? Don’t they have other worthwhile jobs? “
Later, several political parties, including Hindu Munnani and Hindu Makkal Katchi, filed various cases against her. The complaint alleged that Khushbu Sundar, wearing slippers, sat cross-legged before goddesses Lakshmi, Sarswathy and Parvathy during a puja in Chennai. In front of the statue of Parvathy.
