Killer Mike Gives Passionate Speech as He Wins Album of the Year at 2024 BET Awards: 'This Win Is Absolutely Ours'

Killer Mike took home one of the biggest awards of the night at this year’s BET Awards.

The Grammy winner was honored with album of the year at Sunday’s awards show in Los Angeles for his album MICHAEL.

In his acceptance speech, the musician expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from his fellow black artists, saying simply, “Thank you for seeing me, black people.”

The artist (born Michael Render) also spoke about the arrest at the Grammys this year, saying, “Technically, I shouldn’t have been here.”

“They handcuffed me and took me out of this building. But I want to tell you – look at God, because I’m back, baby. I’m back and I’m alive,” he continued his passionate speech. “I want to tell the black people that I’m back for BET. Not because none of the white people are calling anybody.”

“A black man runs this business. A black company put on this show and they got my black ass back here. Thank you all,” he added, telling the crowd that his win was a win for everyone in attendance.

“I’m a representation of one of the best things God ever created – and that’s half of the black family. Black men and women – I’m you, whether you’re young, whether you’re old, whether you like me or not “, He said. “I am absolutely you, and this victory is absolutely ours.”

Finally, before leaving the stage, the rapper reflected on his political experience and encouraged the audience to vote.

“They will tell you that it matters who we vote for, and it is. It matters who we vote for on the big stage, but it’s more important that you know who your city councilor is, who your prosecutor is,” he concluded. . “If you don’t like people running, run for election and run yourself.

Killer Mike’s victory comes just days after it was announced that he would not face charges for his arrest on the night of the Grammy Awards. Back in February, the rapper was led away from the awards show in handcuffs just moments after winning best rap song and best rap performance for “Scientist & Engineers” and best rap album, also for Michael.

At the time, the “Run” artist shared a statement with PEOPLE about the public arrest, citing “confusion about which door my team and I need to enter.”

“We had an overzealous security guard, but my team and I have the utmost confidence that I will eventually be cleared of all wrongdoing,” the artist said at the time. “Until then, keep listening Michaeland follow your dreams.”
