The 2024 Golden Globes made history with their winner for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.
Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Annette Bening (Nyad), Greta Lee (Past lives) and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) were all in the running for the prize — and Gladstone walked away with the prize.
Gladstone began her acceptance speech by speaking in Blackfeet, which is an Algonquian language spoken by the Blackfoot or Niitsitapi people. She then returned to communicating in English, crying with joy at her achievement as she raved about her community.
“I love everyone in this room. I’m speechless,” she said. “I just spoke a little bit of the Blackfeet language, the beautiful nation of the community that raised me, that encouraged me to continue, to continue to do this here with my mom, who, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classroom so I had a Blackfeet teacher language when I was growing up.”
Gladstone, 37, continued: “I’m so grateful to be able to speak even a little bit of my language, which I’m not fluent in, up here because in this job the native actors would say their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to achieve original languages on camera.”
From there, the actress explained, “This [win] is historical. It doesn’t just belong to me. I’m holding it right now. I hold it with all my beautiful sisters in the film at this table here and my mother, Tantoo Cardinal, standing on your shoulders. Thank you.”

After thanking Chief Standing Bear, the Osage Nation, Apple TV+ and her team, Gladstone added that her win during Sunday’s ceremony “is for every little recreational kid, every little urban kid, every little Native who has a dream, who sees himself presented in our stories that we tell in our own words with huge allies and huge trust from within each other.”
“So thank you all very much”, she concluded.
