Kim Burrell appears to have called members of one of Pastor Brian Carn’s churches “ugly” in a recent viral video. Until now, much information about the video is missing since the first uploads of the tape did not specify when or where it was recorded.
In the video, the famous gospel singer makes inflammatory remarks about churchgoers. Burrell made an observation about churchgoers and their financial situation. She indicated that these people are often penniless. During the conversation, Burrell made many jokes on similar topics. Furthermore, for dramatic effect, the 49-year-old from Houston paused after her quip. As seen in the video, several guests laughed at her jokes.
What did Kim Burrell say during her sermon at Pastor Brian Carno’s church?
While the exact context of what appears to be a joke is unknown, the singer-songwriter mentioned the socioeconomic level and appearance of worshipers. Kim Burrell said,
“Sometimes, before we become friends, we have to do an interview: How long have you been bankrupt? How often have you changed your name on your utility bill? How many of your invoices are in the name of your young relative? Do you live in a house or trailer?
Then she said, regarding materialism:
“It’s all about the options.” Life is not the same anymore. We went to church.”
She also thanked the participants for attending church without the need for a COVID-19 vaccination or masks. During her speech, Burrell praised Pastor Brian Carno, calling him “truth incarnate.” However, she appeared to insult the churchgoers by calling them ‘ugly’. Later in the film, he can be heard commenting further on the appearance of the guests, but this time there is no wild cheering.
Kim Burrell said,
“Nobody wants to be told that, especially when they already know… Most people aren’t bitter until they realize something negative about themselves, and then someone else notices it and says, ‘Oh, I noticed the ugly, too.’ I just wanted to let you know.”
She went on to say:
“I haven’t chosen someone to be ugly yet.” God is wonderful. God is magnificent. You all look fantastic. Many of you wear hats that hide most of it anyway. “A toast to you.”

I know people like Kim Burrell exist in the world, I’m not naive — but I was happier before I saw this and got more confirmation I didn’t need about how mean and divisive a person can be, especially when preaching in church. pic.twitter.com/ZOwAuD5L6L

Kim Burrell’s explanation of the viral video
Burrell took to Instagram to release a statement in which she attempted to identify her comments as jokes. She also criticized social media statements against her in response to comments on the church video. The singer-songwriter claimed that her statements were printed without context in order to spread defamation against her.
In her statement, Burrell emphasized the following:
“Please be careful with what is written and said (via video) about me, especially if it involves untruths.” Defamation and slander are not tolerated, especially when it involves my name, image or brand. Pages with horrible comments and misleading narratives are identified, reported and hopefully silenced. Again, I’m sorry if anyone believed my comedy was malicious, but under no circumstances will I allow harassment, defamation or defamation of my character.”
This is not the first time the singer has been in trouble. Kim Burrell has already faced backlash for statements she made about the LGBTQ community in 2016.
