King Harald of Norway Hospitalized with Infection During Vacation in Malaysia 

King Harald V of Norway is being treated in hospital for an infection contracted while on holiday in Malaysia.

The 87-year-old monarch was admitted to hospital after falling ill during a private trip to the Southeast Asian country, Norway’s royal household confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

Royal officials added that the king’s son, Crown Prince Haakon, will carry out his duties at home after hospital care.

“His Majesty the King fell ill during his holiday in Malaysia and was hospitalized there with an infection. The King is receiving good care from both Malaysian and Norwegian medical staff,” the royal household said in a statement.

Harald’s latest hospitalization follows a series of other health problems the monarch has faced in recent years. He was also previously hospitalized for infections last May and December 2022.

On Wednesday, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said he was “saddened” to hear the latest news about Harald and wished him a “speedy recovery,” according to Norwegian news agency NTB, according to ABC News.

His trip to Malaysia comes a week after he celebrated his 87th birthday.

According to VGthe king answered whether or not he plans to step down after being asked by reporters during a visit to Faktisk.no, a non-profit fact-checking website, in a follow-up question about Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s shock abdication on January 14. .

“No, I don’t actually have one. I stand by what I’ve been saying all along. I took an oath to the Storting and it lasts for life,” Harald answered then.

Harald ascended the throne in January 1991 at the age of 53. He underwent leg surgery in January 2022 and tested positive for COVID-19 two months later, before being hospitalized again in August of that year for another infection.

In 2003, Harald underwent surgery for bladder cancer and had another operation for heart valve problems in 2005.
