Career
He played quarterback for the Ohio State University football team during his senior year after graduating from Centerville High School. Similarly, when John Cooper was named head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1988, he was the first player to commit to the team.
And over the next five years, he established himself as one of the team’s main names, earning a four-year letter. Kirk played alongside Greg Frey and Kent Graham during his tenure and also led the team in scoring in 1992. In addition, he was named MVP of the 1992 season.
He and his father, Jim, became only the second father-son duo to serve as captains for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as his father served as co-captain with forward Jim Tyrer on the 1960 team. Kirk also held the record for most touchdown passes by any Ohio State player at one time before it was broken by Troy Smith in 2006.
He became a commentator after retiring from playing. He joined the ESPN College GameDay panel, along with Desmond Howard, Rece Davis and Lee Corso, to discuss and analyze college football games, highlights and player profiles.

Along with Chris Fowler, he joined ABC Sports’ college football television series as an analyst. He was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award as the best television studio analyst in 1997.
He later worked as a commentator for ESPN on Thursday night games. He eventually began commentating Saturday night college football games on ABC and became the host of a weekly college football radio program on Columbus’ 97.1 The Fan.
On March 23, 2022, he was announced as the new color commentator for Prime Video Thursday Night Football. That same day, Kirk agreed to an extension to his contract with ESPN, allowing him to continue hosting GameDay, Saturday Night Football and the NFL Draft in addition to his new NFL duties for Amazon.
