Kirsten Neuschäfer’s career
Kirsten has been a sailor since she was young, but in 2006 it became her career. She has developed a wide range of sailing skills, from boat delivery to crew membership. Before competing in the 2018 Golden Globes, Kirsten’s longest solo sailing was a delivery from Portugal to South Africa on a 32-meter ferrocrete boat that required a lot of care and had only one windlass for self-steering.
To photograph the beauty of Antarctica for National Geographic and the BBC, he joined Skip Novak’s Pelagic Expeditions and traveled with the crew to South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula, Patagonia and the Falklands. Kirsten has also taken numerous solo trips, including biking from Europe to her native South Africa. The 2022 Golden Globe Race is her current hurdle.
In recognition of her key contribution to the successful rescue of Tapio Lehtinen, Kirsten Neuschäfer was awarded the Rod Stephens Trophy Seamanship Award.
