Kirsten Schuijt News

Dr. Kirsten Schuijt, the international director general of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), has urged greater community participation in conservation efforts while simultaneously praising the Kenyan government’s dedication to and leadership in this area.

As Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, paid her a visit on Monday, February 13, at the WWF-Kenya office in Nairobi, Dr. Kirsten gave a speech in which she thanked the National Government for continuing to support and work with it in promoting environmental issues.

“The difficulty is enormous. The Kenyan government is a fantastic partner since WWF cannot accomplish this on our own. There are numerous difficulties related to the environment. The new WWF Director General declared, “We open our doors to collaboration with the government and local communities.

The conservation group and other stakeholders were urged to support the national government’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees by Environment Cabinet Secretary Tuya.

“On the ecosystem restoration programme, we set a very ambitious target where we want to push the envelope beyond the 12.3% tree cover that we currently have in the country to aim for 30% in the next 10 years, that is, by 2032,” stated CS Tuya.

The CS noted that the government has surveyed the entire nation and is aware of how much land is available, adding that the dry and semi-arid regions offer the greatest opportunity due to the spaces there.

“We also want to base this on business model concepts. We intend to enlist a green army of young people to assist the procedure so they may do both their part to support ecosystem restoration and earn a living. Through agroforestry, whereby you plant trees to contribute to the tree cover while also earning a living from them, we are mobilising our farmers behind the programme, the CS stated.

After replacing Dr. Marco Lambertini, who led the WWF for nine years after being appointed in 2014, Kirsten was in Kenya on her first official visit.

Kirsten met with representatives from the WWF-Kenya National Office staff, led by Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Awer, the WWF-Africa Regional team, and WWF Practise Leads during her visit on Monday.
