Konica Layak is India’s national rifle shooter. She is the State Champion (Jharkhand) in 10 M Air Rifle Shooting. She committed suicide on December 15, 2021, in a hotel in Kolkata.

Konica Layak was born in 1994 in Anugrah Nagar, Dhanbad, Jharkhand (age 26; time of death). She attended Shree Shree Lakshmi Narayan Trust Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. She then pursued her Masters in Commerce from Raja Shiv Prasad (RSP) College, Dhanbad Jharia, Jharkhand. During college, she joined the NCC and that’s when she became interested in rifle shooting.

Profession
She began her career as a rifle marksman while in college. Later, she participated in various district-level shooting competitions. She is the Jharkhand 10m air rifle shooting champion and has won various state-level rifle shooting competitions in 2015, 2016 and 2017. She also qualified for the national level shooting competitions in Pune 2016 and Kerala 2017. However, she failed to win the competition. In 2021, she started shooting training at Jaideep Karmakar Shooting Academy in Kolkata.

On December 15, 2021, she committed suicide in her hostel room at Mukti Neerh Ladies Hostel on Bireswar Chatterjee Street in Howrah district, West Bengal. She reportedly hung herself from the ceiling fan in her room with a dupatta tied around her neck. During the investigation, local police stated,
Layak apparently hanged herself after her roommate left for work. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Her family is from Jharkhand. “
Local police found a suicide note at the site of the incident. There are a few lines in the suicide note:
I wanted to resign because I couldn’t realize my parents’ dream and I was a failure. “
After hearing the news of her death, her coach Joydeep Karmakar said:
Rayak suffered a setback in October when she was disqualified from the national championships during the GV Mavalankar national preliminary round after she was accused of target tampering. Rayak was the fourth Indian gunman to commit suicide in four months. Since September, three gunmen from Punjab have shot themselves with their own guns. This is definitely a bad time for the American shooting sports community. Maybe psychologists can shed more light on this. I learned about Layak after reading in the newspaper that Sood was moved by her troubles and bought her a new rifle. We contacted her and asked her to come over for training. We reduced her training costs by 50%. When we brought her on board, her skills were very primitive. “
Her mother gave birth to her three days before her death. Her mother said she was happy and had no problems. When her father was asked about this, he said:
I don’t know why she took such drastic action. Local police have begun an investigation. They were checking her phone details. When I last spoke to her on Tuesday night, she seemed fine. I hope the police can find some clues. “

- Konica won 1 gold medal at the district level and 3 gold medals at the state level.
- She lost in national shooting competitions in 2016 and 2017 because she didn’t have an upgraded rifle. She then requested sports authorities and various NGOs to help her. She tagged Indian actor Sonu Sood in a tweet, asking for an upgrade to the rifle. After reading this tweet, Sonu Sood Foundation came to her aid and Sonu Sood gifted her a German rifle worth Rs. 250000. In an interview, she said of the incident,
I cannot own my own rifle as it costs close to Rs 3 lakh. I have to rely on my trainer rifle or my friends. I arranged Rs 80,000 from a friend and took a loan of Rs 1 lakh as loan for the rifle and luckily Sonu Sood Foundation arranged the remaining funds for the purchase of the rifle and I have placed the order. The German made rifle will be in my hands in two and a half months. “
