Kraven The Hunter Review: I’m Frustrated By How Much Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Marvel Superhero Movie Squanders Its Potential

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is no stranger to superhero movies, having played the MCU’s Quicksilver in 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultronbut Kraven the hunter This was his first chance to lead Spider-Man, and while his performance was entertaining, the latest iteration of Sony’s Spider-Verse never lived up to its potential. Previously, Sony’s Spider-Man universe has been a mixed bag of movies. And Tom Hardy’s venom Jared Leto’s film has been generally well-received and performed solidly at the box office Mobius and Dakota Johnson’s mrs webb Movies can bomb in various ways.

for Kraven the hunterDirector JC Chandor has made some serious turns. The film is violent enough to earn an R rating, which already puts it at odds with typical superhero movies. Most violent sci-fi movies might get a PG-13 rating, but ultimately they’re still relatively family-friendly. Kraven the hunterHowever, it features some of the most violent kills I’ve ever seen in a superhero movie – and I’ve seen every one of them dead Pool Movie. Although the violence of “Deadpool” is offset by humor, Kraven the hunter leans into the brutality of its eponymous character, with very bloody results.

expansion

farther, Kraven the hunter is a truly standalone Marvel movie that avoids any form of tie-in with other films in Sony’s franchise. In an age where superhero movies are tasked with advertising the next installment in the series, Kraven the hunter was built to stand on its own, which is certainly an admirable endeavor. However, it would be more admirable if the indie film had a stronger script and better character development, paired with enjoyable action scenes and Taylor-Johnson’s requisite superhero abs.

Kraven the Hunter has too many characters

It gives every Marvel villain an origin story

Kraven the hunter For a movie that’s supposed to be a single antihero origin story, there’s a surprising number of Marvel characters. And, of course, there’s Sergei Kravinov (Taylor-Johnson) and his brother Dmitry Smerdyakov (Fred Heckinger), whom they both fear and respect His own father, crime boss Nikolay Kravinov (played by Russell Crowe). Much of the film’s first act focuses on establishing the relationship between the three Kravinoffs, but it’s still a sketchy dynamic steeped in so much unpackaged toxic masculinity that it becomes Frustratingly trite.

That’s my biggest frustration with this movie. The film aims to deconstruct the idea that men should only be strong and that if they are not predators, they are prey and therefore weak, which is essentially true for men like Dmitry who do not fit this paradigm Harmful. While much of Kraven’s journey is about becoming a different man than Nikolai, walking a path of non-toxic masculinity because of its emphasis on empathy, the film’s ending completely removes all of that. Frankly, it reiterates this paradigm in a way that confuses these characters.

“Bio Squad” marks the official start of the DCU, and with a group of monstrous anti-heroes leading the charge, it’s off to a great start.

Of course, there is another problem, because Kraven the hunter Having included so many characters and spent so much time developing them, Sergei and Dmitri are left with very little, which may be the reason for their ultimately confusing twist. Not only do we get Kraven and the Chameleon’s origin story, the movie also explores the origins of Rhino (Alessandro Nivola) and Calypso (Ariana DeBose), and even There’s also a scene detailing the backstory of The Foreigner (Christopher Abbott). This movie is crammed with a lot of characters, but none of them are fully developed.

Kraven the Hunter’s story is drowned out by superhero action

The story serves the action rather than the action serving the story

although Action movies are fun, and I got the distinct impression that the film’s story was built around what the filmmakers thought were cool action scenes. The story exists to set up these scenes, not to develop the story and character action. To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with big superhero action movies; Kraven the hunter It’s impossible to be a grounded character movie when it contains action scenes that don’t serve the story.

The result is a poorly executed superhero movie with little personality aside from Taylor-Johnson’s charisma. Sure, Nivola’s Rhino is a surprisingly enjoyable character, and Abbott brings some quiet menace to The Foreigner, but even they and Taylor-Johnson can’t distract from the story and characters. Shallow attention span, this seems to be the result of filmmakers wanting to have their superhero action scene cake eaten. It’s frustrating because it has so much potential Kraven the hunterbut it was wasted every time.

The result is a poorly executed superhero movie with little personality aside from Taylor-Johnson’s charisma.

So, in good conscience, I can’t recommend it, except to those who just like action scenes in superhero movies, especially if you like gory and violent R-rated action. I’d say any fan of Tyler Johnson will be pleased with how charming and enjoyable he is. I was amazed at his chemistry with everyone in the film. I just want more. But if none of these things sound appealing, Kraven the hunter It doesn’t do a good job of explaining why it’s a must-see Marvel movie.

Unfortunately, that’s the risk of making a standalone superhero movie – it has to stand on its own. and Kraven the hunter No.

Kraven the hunter Released on December 13th. The film is 127 minutes long, contains bloody violence and strong language, and is rated R.
