Kulbhushan Kharbanda is an Indian actor, best known for his role as the villain Shakaal in the Hindi film Shaan (1980). He is considered one of the most admirable villains in Bollywood.

Kulbhushan Kharbanda was born Hasan Abdul on Saturday, October 21, 1944 in Attock District, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He is 78 years old; as of 2022 . He pursued his bachelor’s degree from Delhi University. After the partition of India, the Kubushan family moved to India from Pakistan. His father’s job included traveling, so his family had to move to different cities across the country. Kubushan went to school in Jodhpur, Aligarh, Dehradun and Delhi. Kubushan revealed in an interview that he was admitted to the National School of Drama; however, he did not attend due to the high failure rate of NSD.

Kulbhushan married Maheshwari Devi Kharbanda on December 8, 1965. Maheshwari is the daughter of Lord Ram Singh II of Pratapgarh in Rajasthan and was earlier married to the Lord of Kota.

Kubushan and Maheshwari had a daughter named Shruti Kharbanda. In 2018, Shruti married Rohit Navale.

Profession
After completing his college studies, Kubushan and his college friends formed a theater group called Abhiyaan, but the life of the group was short-lived. Later, he joined another troupe called Tarik. He then moved to Kolkata and started working with the Hindi theater group ‘Padatik’ led by director Shyamanand Jalan. It was during his theater career in Kolkata that he was invited to work in films and moved to Bombay.

He made his Bollywood debut in 1974 with the film Nishant, directed by Shyam Benegal. He plays the role of policeman Patel in the film.

In 1980, he appeared in Ramesh Sippy’s critically acclaimed film Shaan, in which he played the bald villain Shakaal.
In the 1985 action film Ghulami, he played Havaldar Gopi Dada. This role earned him huge popularity and he was nominated for the 1986 Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2008, he received appreciation for his role as Jodhaa’s father, Raja Veer Bharmal, in the historical drama film Jodha Akbar.

In 2001, Kubushan starred in the National Award-winning film Lagaan. His role as Raja Puran Singh Chawla in this film earned him a nomination for the 2002 IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor.

He has appeared in all three of Deepa Mehta’s Elements trilogy: Fire (1996), Earth (1998) and Water (2005). He appeared in JP Dutta’s films Border (1997) and Refugee (2000). He is also known for his performances in Shyam Benegal’s films Manthan (1976), Bhumika: The Role (1977) and Junoon (1978).

- In an interview, when Kubushan was asked which performance medium he preferred, he replied:
I refused to make a movie and act in a play! I lost hundreds of thousands of rupees. But I never complain. It was a choice I made and I could afford it at the time. The funny thing is, when we were in the film industry, if I told people I was filming, they would ask me why I was wasting my time! So I often lied to people when I had to go to rehearsals or perform my plays. At that time, people would only respect actors who made movies. ”
- In 2011, Kubushan injured his back after falling while riding a horse, and subsequently turned down director Vinay Sharma’s offer to play a role in Atmakatha; however, Vinay Sharma awaits his full recovery.
- In 2015, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards.
- When Kulbhushan was living in Kolkata as a theater artist, director Shyam Benegal wanted him to work in his film Nishant (1974). Kulbhushan thought traveling from Kolkata to Mumbai was a waste of time and energy, so he refused; however, Shyam Benegal was very enthusiastic and sent him a ticket.
