Almost two years after giving marriage a try, Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula are back in the Hamptons for season eight Summer house. But the honeymoon phase is definitely over.
“I’m not going to lie about it, when we left one summer, we weren’t in a bad place, but we definitely didn’t really agree on a lot of things, like balancing work and our personal lives,” Cooke, 41, tells PEOPLE.
When Kyle and Amanda, 32, arrived in the house with Paige DeSorbo, Ciara Miller, Gabby Prescod and new roommate West Wilson during Wednesday’s premiere, Paige asked Amanda to pick which “era” she was in.
“I might be in an era of impatience, especially for Kyle,” Amanda told the ladies as Kyle gave West, 28, a tour of the house.

In an on-camera interview, Amanda explained that she was afraid of pregnancy Winter house months earlier had taken a toll on her marriage.
“There’s a reason I come home every year, and that’s to spend time with people other than Kyle,” the New Jersey native said. “I took a pregnancy test during the winter. And I feel like we haven’t been in a really good place since then. Taking that test really made us start thinking about what’s next. And we are not ready.”
At this stage in their marriage, Kyle says questions about how he and Amanda are trying to start a family and move out of New York come from all over the place.
“All these burning questions that are not only being asked by the producers and the audience, but also by our friends, our family,” CEO and founder of Loverboy tells PEOPLE. “They’re asking, ‘What’s next?'”
After West made a quesadilla for the house with Ciara’s help – much to the shock of her housemates – Amanda, Gabby and Danielle Olivera got involved in the cleanup. Amanda tried to persuade her husband to help her as well, and he snapped: “Your little impudence needs to be curbed.”
“I feel like I’ve struggled to really feel like I’m on the same team about anything,” Kyle said in a confessional interview.

After dinner, the housemates headed to the local carnival where they played games, went horseback riding and drank beer. Kyle, who won a Rasta banana pushie he named Mon, confronted Amanda about their lack of time together.
“I know that it is very good for us to hang out with friends separately. What I want for this summer is to spend more time together,” said Amandi. “We’re like a couple that doesn’t tie themselves at the hip.”
Amanda told Kyle it was his fault they weren’t spending time together. “All you do is spend time in your office,” she added.

Kyle said Amanda didn’t seem to miss him when he traveled to work.
“I’m at home, looking after the dogs and watching TV, so I’m fine,” she replied.
Kyle hoped he and Amanda could be “a little more like inseparable,” saying, “I’m starting to feel like I’m the only one missing something in our relationship,” he said.
Amanda suggested, “We’ll use this summer to come back to life.”
Kyle admits that he and Amanda struggle with finding work-life balance.
“We’re not making it easy on ourselves,” she tells PEOPLE. “We have been filming two TV shows for three years. We work together and run a company, especially in alcohol where it’s crazy demanding, and it puts a strain on us. It definitely affects our relationship.”

The morning after the carnival, Amanda bothered Kyle because he spent most of that night with a stuffed banana.
“He blames me, makes it difficult for me, and then what did he do all night? He hangs out with Mona,” Amanda Danielle, 35, said as Kyle listened.
For the first party of the summer, Gabby organized a sparkling party on the eve of the 4th of July. New housemate Jesse Solomon arrived in time for the party, but Summer house vets Carl Radke and Lindsay Hubbard spent the weekend in Washington, DC
Kyle caught up with Paige, 31, during the party and told her about his relationship problems.
“She says things like, shut me up,” Kyle said. “I don’t feel as a team like we’re really functioning as well as I want. We start talking about next steps, we talk about family, we talk about looking for homes. But my god, I’m a little scared… less so. Her #1 beef with me is that I work too much. How can you bother me while I’m working? I’m trying to like myself, set us up as, financially secure.”

In a confessional interview, Paige suggested that Amanda was simply acting alone.
“Part of it is just his wife’s personality,” said the fashion influencer. “And I don’t think he realized that when they got married.”
Kyle reiterated to Paige that, given how things were between him and Amanda at the time, “the thought of adding kids to the mix scares me to death.”
The New Hampshire native tells PEOPLE that he sees Summer house like in a way several months of therapy.
“I always think filming is a bit therapeutic for couples who are on the same show,” he says. “I know it sounds crazy, but you’re forced to talk about things you conveniently avoid, and I mean Summer house like my therapy.”

Later during the party, Paige told Amanda what she and her husband had been talking about.
“It’s full of sh—,” Amanda replied. “The proof is in the pudding. Last night he said, ‘I want to hang out with you more.’ And I said: ‘Let’s go on the Ferris wheel together.’ And then he rode with the stuffed toy he won. Well, like, he just makes s— worse. He’s just stressed about work and then takes it out on me.”
The premiere ended with Paige mentioning to Amanda that Kyle had expressed concern about taking the next steps in their marriage.
“Then go and be single!” Amanda remarked. “Like, what do you want? I mean, he fucking cheated on me and I took him back. And it’s like, let’s talk about it. Like, pull yourself together.”

Kyle says that today he and Amanda are “still on the fence” about how they feel about having kids and buying a house outside of New York.
“You’ll see us thinking, ‘Hey, should we start looking at homes? Should we start looking for another home if we keep our apartment? How to balance work and travel with two dogs? What are we going to do when we have children? Do we want to live closer to Amanda’s parents so we can benefit from the in-laws?’” he says of what comes next. Summer house season 8. “All these things that a lot of people can probably relate to, we’re just kind of trying to figure out right there in front of the camera.”
