Change is afoot, but the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally won a playoff series. Team president Brendan Shanahan made the decision to part ways with general manager Kyle Dubas public on Friday morning.
Shanahan issued a statement saying, “I would want to thank Kyle for his unrelenting dedication over these last nine seasons with the organisation, including his last five as general manager. “Kyle created a terrific atmosphere in our locker room and among our staff and relentlessly pushed our team to improve year after year. We congratulate Kyle for his significant efforts and wish him and his family the best in the future.
Dubas’ future was the subject of speculation the entire season because of the lack of a contract renewal. Even though the Leafs’ Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round five-game loss to the eighth-seeded Florida Panthers was disappointing, it appeared that everyone was eager to keep the connection going until Dubas spoke during a press conference.
At the time, he discussed the toll his prominent role in hockey’s most active and competitive media market had had on his personal life.
The 37-year-old Dubas and his wife Shannon have two kids; “my family is a hugely important part of what I do,” he added. “It’s probably unfair for me to say where I’m at without having a better sense of what this year took on them. It’s difficult for me because we haven’t yet been able to have those complete chats, but it was a really difficult year for them.
“I absolutely don’t have it in me to go someplace else, I would say. Therefore, it will either arrive or take some time to adjust while considering the local seasons. But you won’t catch me anywhere else the next week. After this year, I can’t put kids through that.
These statements put a stop to rumours that Dubas would be moving on to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Their new owners, Fenway Sports Group, have a tendency for appointing young, analytics-driven managers like Dubas for their other sports organisations. They fired general manager Ron Hextall and team president Brian Burke in April.
