Kyle Richards Reveals She Does Her Own Hair and Makeup ‘Quite Often’ for ‘RHOBH’ (Exclusive)

In Bravo land, Kyle Richards has one of the most famous hair styles.

Episode after episode The The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, her hair is flawless, which begs the question — what does it take to have such hair? The star, 54, gave PEOPLE all the details about what goes into her hair (and makeup!) on the show — and how often she does it all herself.

“In the shows, I often do my own makeup and hair,” she reveals while talking about the new Nexxus Unbreakable Care collection. “Unless I had a sitting interview at the beginning of the season, and even [for] I did hair and makeup for some of them myself.”

As Richards explains, as the series progressed, she would stick to the hair and makeup teams for interviews or “big events,” but that has slowed down since she was part of the original cast in 2010.

“Now I’ll do more for events and sit-down interviews, but I often do my own hair and makeup,” she says.

“I did The Kelly Clarkson Show I did my own makeup. It was like… I’m good at it and I like that I don’t have to rely on someone all the time.”

Creating her own look is no stranger to Richards, who says she has watched makeup artists since she was a little girl. “It’s something that to me is art,” she says, adding that at one point in her life she bought a book written by artist Kevyn Aucoin.

“And I would pick it up and say ‘OK, I’m going to recreate this.’ And I would always sit in the sink on the counter and take out my thing and play with it and really enjoy it,” Richards says. “So I like doing it myself.”

As a regular viewer of reality TV, Richards adds that she “doesn’t like the fact that girls use glamor all the time for everything, because it’s just not reality.”

“For me, my hair is what gives me confidence,” she says. “I mean, my hair can look great and everything else is a mess, and I feel good about myself. So I always take really good care of my hair.”
