She performs as La Zarra in what is arguably the most renowned music competition in the world, the Eurovision Song Contest, where she will represent France with the song Évidemment (Obviously). The song was co-written by her and Benny Adam, and it was produced by them and fellow Montrealers Banx & Ranx.
Every May, each nation in Europe submits a musician or band to perform a three-minute song at Eurovision. One of its most well-known winners? Céline Dion, who won in 1988 for Switzerland.
161 million people watched the competition on television last year, and millions more watched it online.
La Zarra is well recognised in France already, unlike Dion, who was essentially parachuted into Switzerland just for Eurovision. She won the francophone Breakout Songwriter Award at the 2022 Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) Awards as a result of 2021’s Tu t’en iras (You’ll Leave), her biggest song to date, which went platinum there.
In 2016, La Zarra made her debut in the music business with a featured appearance alongside French rapper Niro on Printemps blanc (White Spring).
She stated, in both English and French, “It was my first song ever,” in a phone interview in March. “I just did it because (my producer Adam) asked me to, and I then went back to my regular life (as a hairdresser in Montreal).” In 2020, she would release a new song.
“I worked on numerous minor jobs that I didn’t particularly enjoy. Because I couldn’t, I don’t think I ever stayed in a job for more than three months. To do something I don’t enjoy and then pass away didn’t make sense to me. I’m lucky that music has entered my life.

French chanson, a style of French pop music particularly well-liked in the mid-1900s that emphasises the lyrics and frequently has a working-class perspective on the world, is a form of music that La Zarra mixes the American rap and pop she was exposed to in Montreal with. The songs La vie en rose and Non, je ne regrette rien by Edith Piaf best represent the music her mother used to sing to her when she was a youngster.
“Piaf is a little bit like my singing instructor. You can experience love and other emotions in the music that you are unable to experience in real life. I found that genre of music to be a good distraction.
Additionally, she has never revealed her age online. She is perplexed yet compliant when the wrong figures are used. “I’m not sure why people seem to be so preoccupied with my age. Is it the fact that I’m a woman? to me to compare? But they won’t know since I find it amusing.
But her brilliance was something she couldn’t conceal. “Everyone was shocked when I decided to pursue music at the end of 2019 with just four demo tracks. ‘OK, that’s easy,’ I thought.
“There were ups and downs after that. It’s day and night, so it’s pretty difficult work. I can now tell that my mother is already happy that I can support myself through music.
