Lainey Wilson is the latest artist to breathe new life into a song lost in time.
On Thursday, Apple Music unveiled the CMA Entertainer of the Year’s recording of “I Would If I Could” as its fifth release from its Lost and Found program, which spotlights unreleased songs penned by some of Nashville’s best songwriters and re- recorded by today’s greatest artists.
“I Would If I Could” was originally written in 1996 by award-winning songwriters Skip Ewing and Dean Dillon. In an upcoming interview on Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen, Wilson explained why she chose that path.
“When you listen to the first line of the song, it’s classic… And it feels like a song that should already be a song. Two of the most amazing songwriters to ever exist,” said the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer. “I look up to them a lot. And I wanted to record something that was made a long time ago, that still stands the test of time, it’s timeless; this tune.”

Wilson — who was 4 when the song was written — joked that she was “probably picking her nose and everything” at the time.
Bannen also asked the “Heart Like a Truck” singer how she resonates with the lyrics.
“Have you ever felt this way about someone like, ‘I’m giving you a gift by leaving?'” the host said.

Wilson replied, “Oh yeah… There’s only one guy that I kind of love, when I think about that time in our lives, I smile and think, ‘It was fun, but I knew you didn’t need me.’ But yeah, I think everybody felt that way.”

In a separate interview at Lost & Found RadioWilson reflected on her choice to participate in the program.
“This city is full of so many songs that will never see the light of day,” she said. “I’m first and foremost a songwriter and I want to be known as a songwriter and I want to shine a light on songs that for some crazy reason didn’t see the light of day. Let’s bring it to light.”
After searching through multiple song options, Wilson knew this was the one.
“I just knew, I thought, this is it. It felt classic. And just like you said, it was coming from the guy’s perspective. But I like to show the other side of it. That way people can feel it from a different angle,” she said. is.
