Lamont Dozier Passed Away At The Age Of 81

Singer and songwriter Lamont Dozier has just passed away at the age of 81. His son Lamont Dozier Jr. he confirmed the news on Instagram by posting a photo of himself with his father. The inscription read:

“Rest in heavenly peace, Dad!!!”

Dozier’s cause of death has not been confirmed. His funeral arrangements are also unavailable at this time.

A summary of the life and career of Lamont Dozier

Lamont Herbert Dozier, born June 16, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, became famous as the co-writer and producer of 14 songs that reached the top of the US Billboard charts. Along with Brian and Eddie Holland, he was a member of the singer-songwriter and producer duo Holland-Dozier-Holland. They composed, arranged and produced songs for Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremas, Four Tips and other musicians. Dozier was the arranger and producer, while Brian and Eddie were responsible for the lyrics and vocal production.

Lamont founded and ran Invictus Records and Hot Wax Records. He wrote and produced popular songs for bands such as Freda Payne, 100 Proof Aged for Soul, Chairmens of Board and others. Dozier began by releasing a few singles for Detroit-based companies before joining Holland-Dozier-Holland as composers and producers for Motown Records in 1962. In 1963, they had a string of hit singles with Martha and The Vandellas.

Lamont left Holland-Dozier-Holland in 1973 and went on to record several solo albums. In 1974, his biggest success was Trying to Hold on to My Woman. He also composed and performed the theme song for the sitcom That’s My Mama. Along with the LP Lamont released singles such as Cool Me Out and Shout About It.

Dozier was a popular composer in the 1980s, writing the song Two Hearts for the movie Buster. The song was nominated for an Oscar and won a Grammy Award. He also composed music for Alison Moyet and Men and Women.
