Lancashire Police confirmed the death was “medically related”.

Chief Constable Chris Rowley said: “This is incredibly sad and tragic news. My thoughts and prayers are with all of Pete’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Pete’s death will be a shock to the entire police force and the wider police family across the country.

“He was an outstanding officer who served the communities of Lancashire with pride.

“He was also greatly respected and adored by all who knew and worked with him.”

Peter began his career in Preston and quickly rose through the ranks to become a “respected” officer throughout the country.

He played key roles in many high-profile events and appeared at press conferences during the search for mum-of-two Nicola Bulley.

Her body was later found in the River Wyre on February 19, about a mile from where she disappeared while walking her dog in St Michael’s on Wyre.

The respected Assistant Chief Constable also gave evidence to the Manchester Arena terror attack inquiry.

Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner Andrew Snowden paid a heartfelt tribute following the news.

He said: “ACC Lawson represented the best of policing. He embodied the values of service, duty and honesty. It was an honor to work with him.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service boss Justin Johnson also wrote: “Terrible news. All our thoughts are with Pete’s family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.”

Peter’s death comes weeks after a damning report that Lancashire Police made a mistake when they disclosed Nicola’s “highly sensitive” personal details.

The review, led by the College of Policing, found that the police had shown “lack of focus” and errors in judgement.

In its 17 recommendations, the report said revealing personal details about Nicola’s life was “avoidable and unnecessary”.
