Larry Birkhead went out of his way to make this Halloween special for his daughter Dannielynn.
On Wednesday, the devoted dad, 50, shared some glimpses of the process he went through to make the 17-year-old the Halloween costume he had promised her, unaware it wasn’t already available for sale.
“Dannielynn came to me a few weeks ago and said she wanted to be an ‘Oni Sister’ for Halloween. She’s a character from one of her favorite shows, Avatoro Sentai Donbrothers,” Larry wrote, referring to the Japanese tokusatsu series.
“I believe I brushed it off and said, ‘Sure, we’ve got plenty of time for that.’ Fast forward to finding out they don’t sell costumes in stores…,” he continued. “So I had to build it from scratch based on a 3D model. It’s the first time I’ve tried it before, but I guess we’re getting towards the end of the trick-or-treat phase (or maybe not) so I said I’d give it my best shot. ”
After “hours and hours,” he unveiled his version of the costume, “which she reminded me countless times ‘it’s not a Power Ranger!’ ”
We ran out of time, so I had to leave some things unfinished, so I just left as a ‘tired dad’, he joked. “I think I made that costume a little better than hers😴 Dannielynn then went to fill the pillow case with candy with her friend. I’m glad I made her laugh, but next time I’ll check online to make sure what she wants is available! 😆 Good Night witch 🎃.”

In September, Larry reflected on how his teenage daughter has grown as he marked her 17th birthday with a heartfelt post on Instagram.
“Happy 17th birthday Dannielynn! I’m so proud of you in every way. Have the best day ever!” he started.
“You’re funny, crazy smart, beautiful and everything I could ever imagine. Your mom would be so proud of you, I am,” he continued, referring to Dannielynn’s late mom, Anna Nicole Smith.
“Happy Birthday! Love Dad ❤️ By the way, when you asked me if you could live in my basement forever. I said yes, but I didn’t have the heart to tell you there are no basements in Florida 😂 ❤️ # Happy Birthday 🎂.”

Speaking to PEOPLE in May, Birkhead talked about the similarities between his daughter and her late mom as she continues to grow and come into her own, noting that the teenager is “generous like her mom.”
“And at the same time, she’s picky like her mom. Oh, my God!” he was laughing. “She doesn’t eat meat at all. She ate meat once in her life. She doesn’t eat meat at all, but she’s not a big fan of vegetables either.”
“It’s been a pain since she was little. She’s a big pasta eater, likes pizza and stuff, and we give her vitamins and stuff to make her well-rounded. She gets a lot of sauce on her pizza. Her mom was a sauce-crazy spices. She would just extra, extra, extra, extra of everything and she would load up. And that’s Dannielynn.”
