Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth Strike Up a Sunny Romance in Lonely Planet Trailer (Exclusive)

Sparks fly between Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth in a colorful new romance.

Lonely Planet is the story of a novelist (Dern) on Moroccan writer’s retreat whose acquaintance with a young man (Hemsworth) “evolves into an intoxicating, life-changing love affair,” according to the synopsis.

In the first trailer, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Dern, 57, experiences a personal renaissance in beautiful Morocco while working through her writer’s block.

“I love that the story focuses on connection and intimacy and feeling truly seen,” Dern tells PEOPLE. “It’s a romance of self-discovery as much as knowing the other person deeply.”

Hemsworth, 34, agrees. “The story isn’t just about a romance between two people; it’s about personal growth, self-discovery, and the complexity of relationships. The characters are connected, flawed, and navigate the beauty and challenges of love in an environment that’s visually stunning and culturally rich.”

Lonely Planet “it reminded me why I love making movies,” he adds. “It’s not just because of the work itself, but because of the connections you make with the people you share the journey with.”

As for her favorite memory from the set, Dern points out “Liam feeding me 87 olives and riding on the back of his motorcycle.” The Oscar winner says that during filming, Hemsworth was “such a protective champion and partner to me.”
