Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert apologized for her behavior during an appearance in Denver bug juicewhich resulted in her removal from the theater.
The statement to The Associated Press and other media outlets comes days after the Republican congresswoman confirmed some details of local media reports about her behavior at the event and after a spokesperson previously disputed reports that she had smoked.
“The past few days have been difficult and humbling, and I am truly sorry for the unwanted attention my Sunday night in Denver brought to the community,” Boebert said, according to Colorado Sun. “While none of my actions or words as a private citizen that evening were intended to be malicious or intended to cause harm, the reality is that they were and I regret it.”
Boebert added that she “fell behind my values” at the Buell Theater during the production and mentioned her “public and difficult divorce,” which she said was a “challenging personal time for me and my entire family.”
Boebert’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Security footage from the event shows the politician seemingly crying out and ignoring someone behind her who is trying to talk to her. He was also seen seemingly taking flash photos with his phone and dancing during the production.
“Whether it was the excitement of seeing a highly anticipated production or the natural anxiety of being in a new environment, I really didn’t remember smoking that night when I discussed the night’s events with my campaign team, confirming my enthusiasm for the musical,” Boebert continued. in his statement, adding that he understands “the nature of what this looks like.”
“Regardless of my belief, it is now clear that was not true,” she said afterwards. βIt was not my intention or my campaign’s intent to mislead, but we understand the nature of what this looks like. We know we will have to work to earn back your trust and it may not happen overnight, but we will do it.β
Denver Post initially reported this week that Boebert was escorted from the scene after a “disruption,” citing an incident report filed with the site. Denver Arts & Venues also noted that she and another person were asked to leave after receiving a warning after three people complained.
The pregnant woman told Fast that she asked Boebert to stop smoking, and that the politician refused.

After initial reports, Boebert wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she “thoroughly enjoyed the AMAZING Beetlejuice at the Buell Theater and I plead guilty to laughing and singing too loud.”
“Everyone should go watch it if you get a chance this week and please let me know how it ends!” she added.
A spokesperson at the time disputed reports that she had cried in the cinema, citing fog machines and noting that “they believe there was a misunderstanding with someone sitting near her.”
The Fast also reported that Boebert and her companion refused to leave and allegedly encouraged the orderlies to “go pick up” Denver police.
Recently released security footage showed the duo being escorted out of the hall as the politician pointed her finger at the usher.
