Lauren Graham Recalls Friend Matthew Perry’s ‘Really Happy Year’ Before His Death

Lauren Graham believes Matthew Perry was in a good position before he died.

The Gilmore Girls alum reflected on her close relationship with Friends star, as well as the pride he found in writing. “This past year, he was so proud of the book he wrote and how many people it touched,” Graham, 56, said. CBS Morning performance Thursday. “It was a success that gave him a level of happiness that I haven’t seen in him for a very long time, so it’s a nice memory.”

Of Perry’s unexpected death on October 28 at the age of 54, Graham added: “I’m still in shock. I mean, it’s a really tragic loss, and he’s leaving his wonderful work behind. That’s something to be thankful for, and again, the book really meant something to him, so it was a really happy year for him.”

The Parenthood alum reflected on her friendship with Perry, saying, “No one has ever made me laugh like that. Only tears, flowing. There was such joy in being around him and being his friend.”

Graham and Perry met years before teaming up for the 2008 film Birds of America, and they maintained a close friendship in the years that followed. There was even a photo of them together (which he captioned “Me and the beautiful Lauren Graham”) in Perry’s 2022 memoir. Friends, lovers and the big scary thing.

He added: “We have great chemistry when we work together and it’s fun to work with a close friend.”

Graham also spoke about her close relationship with Perry in her memoir I speak as fast as I can – acknowledging that there is a line between friendship and romance that the couple almost crossed. “The only bright spot, as far as guys go, was the event where I met Matthew Perry,” she wrote, referring to a time in her life when she was single. “He became my longtime friend who I almost but never dated, or FWIABNED.”

Perry’s memoir detailed his lifelong struggle with substance abuse, as well as his road to recovery. The Matthew Perry Foundation was established in his name to further his mission of supporting and advocating for those facing addiction.
