Laxmi Singh is a police officer from the 2000 batch cadre of the Uttar Pradesh Police in India. On November 28, 2022, she became the first female police chief of Uttar Pradesh.

Laxmi Singh was born on Thursday, May 2, 1974, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (48 years; as of 2022). Her zodiac sign is Taurus. She attended Loreto Convent Secondary School in Lucknow. Lakshmi was a bright student who secured second rank in the Uttar Pradesh 10th board examination. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the College of Engineering and Technology and received a gold medal. Thereafter, she studied for a master’s degree in sociology. In 2000, she passed the civil services examination and became an IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre.

After completing her IPS training, she served in various cities of Uttar Pradesh including Banaras, Chitrakoot, Gonda, Farrukhabad, Baghpat and Bulandshahar with the rank of SP/SSP . Lakshmi is a firebrand IPS officer who has been actively involved in investigations related to crimes against women. Laxmi led the Unnao case, in which police arrested a 21-year-old boy and his teenage accomplices for allegedly poisoning three Dalit girls. Lakshmi was known as a tough taskmaster who took huge action against the mafia and organized crime in the area where she worked. She also encounters many valuable bandits and terrifying criminals. She has also done commendable work in the field of women’s safety. She also helped solve as many as 4,500 cold cases in three weeks. She was instrumental in redressing public dissatisfaction and police personnel issues. She also served for a time as DIG on the task force.

In 2014, Lakshmi was appointed as Deputy Inspector General of Police of 6 BN PAC Meerut where she ensured a strict crackdown on criminal gangs. She conducted numerous raids in crime-prone areas and helped arrest some of the most notorious bandits and their associates. Later, she was appointed as DG, ADG and DIG in different regions.

Impressed with her work, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath promoted her to the post of Inspector General of Police, Lucknow, in 2019. As IGP of Lucknow, Lakshmi led a team of several experienced police officers to solve serious criminal cases and helped the police retain public trust.

Lakshmi was later appointed as the principal of the Police Training School in Meerut for some time. During her tenure, she worked to transform its functions and transform PTS into a center of excellence. Under her leadership, PTS Meerut was declared India’s No.1 Police Training Institute by the Union Home Ministry. The agency also received an award of Rs 2 lakh from the ministry. Seeing her honest attitude towards her work, Yogi Adityanath soon made her the nodal officer of ‘Mission Shakti’ to which she gave a new dimension.

In 2020, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed her to lead an investigation into the role of police personnel in the encounter with feared gangster Vikas Dubey in Kanpur, which led to the arrest of DSP Devendra Mi Eight policemen including DSP Devendra Mishra were killed.

On November 28, 2022, she was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Gautam Bader Nagar (Noida), becoming the first female Police Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. She replaces Alok Singh, who was transferred as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) in the DGP office, Lucknow. Noida introduced the commissioner system in 2020. Apparently, even in the old senior superintendent system, there was no woman SSP in Gautam Budh Nagar.

  • While Lakshmi was undergoing training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, officials declared her the best probationer.
  • Lakshmi was appointed as the Lucknow district police inspector in 2022, while her husband Rajeshwar Singh contested the 2022 Legislative Assembly elections from Sarojini Nagar constituency. Concerned about her influence on voters in the region, Samajwadi Party national president Naresh Uttam Patel wrote to the Election Commission seeking her removal. Naresh said in the letter that Lakshmi should be removed from the Lucknow-wide IG post and transferred elsewhere as her husband is a candidate from Sarojini Nagar constituency and she can influence voters. However, his request was rejected by the Election Commission.
