Laxmikant Mathuranath Dixit is an Indian Vedic Karmkand (ritualism) scholar who specializes in Srauta, Smarta, Yajna, Tuberculosis and other rituals. He is famous for leading 121 priests to participate in the consecration ceremony (Pran-Pratishtha) of the “Ramolala” idol at the Rama Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh on January 22, 2024.

Laxmikant Mathuranath Dixit was born in 1938 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (age 86 in 2024). He studied the Vedas and rituals under his uncle Ganesh Dixit Javji Bhatt. After completing his education in Shukla Yajurveda at Sangved Vidyalaya, he started working as a teacher in the same institution.

He hails from a family in Jhar village near Solapur in Maharashtra. His ancestors moved to Kashgar, where they devoted their lives to the study of Hindu traditions and rituals.

Consecration ceremony of Ram Lala statue
In 2023, Dixit was selected by Shankaracharya Swami Vijayendra Saraswati of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham to lead a performance by 121 Vedic scholars from across India, in the presence of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust Treasurer Swami Govind Devagiri and Secretary Champat Rai. ‘Ram’s Consecration Ceremony (Pran-Pratishtha) Lala idol at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
In September 2023, the authorities sent a team of scholars, including Dixit and Acharya Ganesh Shastri Dravid, to Ayodhya to decide on a date for the consecration. After the consecration date was fixed, Pandit Dixit presided over a group of Vedic scholars to perform the basic rituals including Sarva Prayashchit homam and Dashvid snan on January 16, 2024, till the final Devpranpratishtha ceremony on January 22 . 2024.

He breathed his last on June 22, 2024 in Varanasi. He was ill for a long time. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his sadness over the death of Laxmikant.
Facts/Trivia
- His family history, known as “vansh parampara”, dates back to the famous 17th-century Kashgar scholar Gaga Bhatt, who is credited with presiding over the coronation of Chatrapati Shivaji in 1674 famous for its rituals. He is the 11th generation heir. Pandit Gaga Bhatt.
- In an interview, while talking about being given the opportunity to oversee the consecration ceremony (Pran-Pratishtha) of the ‘Ramolala’ idol at the Rama temple in Ayodhya, he said:
It was because of the blessings of the legendary saints and seers of Kashgar that I was assigned the responsibility of overseeing the consecration of Ram Lala. I will perform my duties with the blessings of Lord Ram. “
