Career
Queen Latifah began singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and made her first public appearance as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne.
Latifah began informally singing and rapping in restrooms and locker rooms during her freshman year of high school. In response to the formation of another young girl group, she formed the rap group Ladies Fresh with her friends Tangy B and Landy D in her first year. The group soon began to appear wherever they could.
Latif’s mother was the driving force; she dealt with students and music. She invited DJ Mark the 45 King, a local disc jockey, to perform at the school dance. The basement of James’ parents’ house in East Orange, stocked with electronic and recording equipment, became a gathering place for Latifah and her friends, dubbed the “Flavor Unit.”
James, who was just starting out as a producer, hosted Yo! MTV Raps, Fred Braithwaite, Princess of the Posse Queen Latifah (professionally known as “Fab 5 Freddy”) rap demo.
