Queen Latifah began singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and made her first public appearance as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne.

Latifah began informally singing and rapping in restrooms and locker rooms during her freshman year of high school.
