To be clear, he wasn’t claiming he was allowing his guys to come up with risky proposals. His argument was that a leader must be willing to let go of little things so that followers might assume responsibility.
Willink stated that if one of your reports encounters problems with the plan you put upon him, he will blame you for the issue and be less equipped to respond in a helpful manner; nevertheless, if a problem emerges with his own plan, he must answer to himself.
The former SEALs explained that by allowing your team to participate in the decision-making process during an unexpected challenge, you not only prevent your team members from becoming lazy, but you’re also giving them ownership. They did this by looking back at the executive who quickly gave an order to her employee who had a question. They have a greater probability of succeeding in the work if they do this since they will be more aware of the motivations behind their actions.
