He was the fourth child of James Bias Jr. and Dr. Lonise Bias. Bias grew up in Landover, Maryland, and attended Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, before attending the University of Maryland.

At the University of Maryland, Len Bias was a first-team All-American forward. Two days after the Boston Celtics selected him as the second pick in the 1986 NBA draft. Bias died as a result of cardiac arrhythmia caused by a cocaine overdose.

After the deaths of their sons, James and Louise Bias became outspoken advocates. Louise Bias became an anti-drug lecturer, while James Bias became a gun control advocate. Furthermore, Louise Bias established the Len and Jay Bias Foundation in memory of her children to encourage young people to be better role models.
