Leonardo DiCaprio leads the way when it comes to generosity, according to Blood diamond directed by Ed Zwick.
In his new memoir Hits, failures and other illusions: my forty-something yearsZwick, 71, recalls learning that DiCaprio, now 49, had given money to build a well in the village where they filmed.
After researching the source of the project, Zwick found that DiCaprio “quietly donated funds to leave the place in better shape” than when they arrived.
“In this, and in many other areas of his life, Leo walks the talk,” Zwick wrote.
Political thriller from 2006 Blood diamond saw DiCaprio as Danny Archer, a smuggler and mercenary in search of a pink diamond discovered in civil war-torn Sierra Leone. Filming took place in Mozambique and Cape Town, South Africa. According to Zwick, DiCaprio’s practice of helping filming locations eventually became studio policy.

When his co-star Lily Gladstone’s Oscar nomination was announced in January, DiCaprio posted a celebratory tribute on his Instagram.
“Congratulations to my dear friend @LilyGladstone for making Oscar history as the first Indian to be nominated for Best Actress in Killers of the flower moonand the fourth Indigenous actress ever to earn a nomination in this category,” he captioned Gladstone’s photo.
