Liam Payne had been struggling with issues related to his ex-fiancée, Maya Henry, in the period leading up to his death on October 16 at the age of 31.
A source familiar with the situation tells PEOPLE that Payne “has been extremely overwhelmed with all the legal issues” involving Henry.
Henry, 23, issued a cease and desist order to the former One Direction singer last week after she claimed he repeatedly contacted her, according to Daily Mail.
The former couple was reportedly engaged before calling it quits in 2022 Daily Mail reported.
In a TikTok shared on October 6 by Henry, a Texas-raised model and novelist I look forward to alleged that her ex – who she does not name but is linked to “One Direction fans” – continues to “blow up” her phone.

“It’s always with different phone numbers. I never know where it’s going to come from… Also [he] he’s going to email me,” Henry claimed. “Not only me, but he’s going to blow up my mom’s phone. Is that normal behavior for you?”
“I also text my friends,” she continued. “I found out later that apparently they could go to his house.”
She further alleged that Payne had “weaponized” One Direction fans against her. “He says he’s ‘hunting One Direction fans because they’ll always be loyal to him and won’t tell him’.”
Payne died after falling from several stories at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, October 16, Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE. The police are determining the cause of his death, and an autopsy will be performed.

Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son Bear Grey, with former Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
