LIAM Payne’s devastated friends were so concerned about the star’s binge drinking and alleged drug use that they planned an intervention, a source has revealed.
A close friend told The Sun they approached him to suggest help on the day of his death, but it only seemed to make his strange behavior worse.

Liam, 31, fell to his death from the third floor of his hotel in Buenos Aires on Wednesday afternoon.
Champagne, prescription drugs, white powder and foil wrappers were found in Liam’s ruined hotel room after he fell from the balcony at around 5pm (9pm UK time).
Fellow hotel guests revealed the star had been behaving in a “disturbing” manner shortly before the fall, with Liam admitting to one woman: “I was in a boy band – that’s why I’m such a f**k.”
Friends said Liam had been in a dark place for the past few weeks and had started drinking as he struggled with his career and other personal issues.
Liam’s label Universal also reportedly dropped the star just days ago.
A source exclusively told The Sun: “His friends had been worried about him for weeks as he was struggling with his career and wanted to release new music but felt he wasn’t as good as his other bandmates, which he kept being told simply It wasn’t true. He was just always so hard on himself.
“In the last few weeks his drinking and suspected drug use started to worry his friends, they actually planned an intervention, it was that bad.
“It broke their hearts to see him like this – but they just didn’t know how to intervene properly.
“They were very worried about him, he was just in a bad way for the last few weeks. Many of his friends were gently telling him to get professional help or go to rehab, but he just wouldn’t listen.
“On the day of his death he was acting very odd and strange. One of his friends again suggested to him that he should seek help, but this seemed to upset him even more.

“Everyone is just freaking out – their only consolation is that the police said he would have died instantly in the fall if he hadn’t suffered.”

Dad-of-one Liam was in the Argentinian capital on his co-star Niall Horan’s tour when he died.
His girlfriend Kate Cassidy, 25, was with him on the trip but reportedly returned home to Florida two days before his death.
Emergency services in Buenos Aires confirmed that he died instantly from fatal skull injuries.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Liam’s severe injuries had led to “internal and external bleeding”.
Police said they found what appeared to be “narcotics, alcohol, destroyed items and furniture” in his hotel room, as well as over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
The results of the toxicology report are awaited.

Witnesses said they saw Liam “causing a commotion” minutes before he died.
Hotel guest Brett Watson told ITV he saw Liam pass out before he was physically removed from the lobby and taken back to his room.
Staff then called 911 and told officers they needed “emergency assistance” with a guest who was “acting strange.”
They reported that the guest was “destroying everything in his room” according to the recordings of the call.
Argentine prosecutors said they had spoken to two women who were allegedly with him the night before his death, although the pair are believed to have left the hotel without him earlier on Wednesday after waiting for him in the lobby, local news outlet Infobae reported.
Liam’s One Direction bandmates said they were “devastated” by his death.
In a joint statement, they said: “In time, and when everyone is able, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, whom we loved very much.”
In a separate statement, bandmate Harry Styles said Liam’s “greatest joy was making people happy”, while Louis Tomlinson said “he was the brother I longed for”.
Liam’s family said they also paid tribute to a “kind, funny and brave soul”.
The star left behind a seven-year-old son, Bear, who he had with Cheryl Cole.
Crowds of grieving fans gathered outside the hotel to pay their respects to the pop star who shot to fame in 2010 aged just 16 on The X Factor.

“I lost my brother when you left us and I can’t explain what I would give to hug you one last time and say goodbye properly.
“All the memories I have with you I will keep in my heart forever.”
Harry Styles wrote: “I am truly devastated by Liam’s death.
“His greatest joy was making other people happy and it was an honor to be with him while he was doing that.
“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was contagious.
“He was warm, supportive and incredibly loving.
“The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will always miss you my dear friend.
“My heart breaks for Karen, Geoff, Nicole and Ruth, his son Bear and all those around the world who knew and loved him, as I do.”
