It will be followed by a trial in 35 Lidl stores including those in Epsom and Tooting.

The tiny digital displays will display all the information you would normally expect to see on a label such as price, weight and unit price.

The change will be introduced in all Lidl supermarkets by the end of this year.

They will be rolling out the tags section by section over the coming months.

The retailer said the change would mean its staff would not have to spend time manually checking and updating paper price lists.

It said they will instead have more time to focus on helping customers and restocking shelves.

Customers have different opinions about the change.

On social media, one Lidl customer said: “Hopefully this idea will go to other supermarkets to save a lot of time and more time to fill up.”

But others fear it could lead to further changes in the trade.

One Facebook user said: “Until they replace staff and go self-service and digital.”

“In this particular case, we’re empowering colleagues by freeing up more time for them to focus on tasks that directly benefit our customers.”

Lidl said the move would also save more than 206 tonnes of carbon a year through reduced paper and packaging.

Fellow discounter Aldi has already introduced digital screens in its stores.

The discovery stunned shoppers who rushed to TikTok after spotting them in stores.

How can I save at Lidl?

There are several ways you can stretch your money further when you shop at Lidl.

Shop early to get the best deals in Lidl’s Sale Hour

Lidl discounts items at the beginning of the day, and you can find the best deals between 7 and 8 am, when most stores are open.

It’s not guaranteed that you’ll find huge discounts every time you visit, but getting to the store when it’s open will increase your chances.

You can find the opening hours of your local branch online.

Follow the pick of the week

You can also keep track of what’s featured in the Pick of the Week section of the Lidl website.

There are discounts every Thursday and they are mostly on fruit, vegetables and meat.

Use social networks and the Lidl app

To stay up to date, follow Lidl on all its social networks. Another way to keep up with offers is to download the Lidl app.
