Lily Gladstone Makes History — and Champions ‘Visibility’ — with Killers of the Flower Moon SAG Win

Lily Gladstone continues to make history!

The Killers of the flower moon star, 37, was named the winner of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Leading Role at Saturday’s 2024 SAG Awards in Los Angeles. She is the first Native American performer to win a SAG Award in that category.

Annette Bening was also nominated for NyadCarey Mulligan for MaestroMargot Robbie for Barbieand Emma Stone for Poor people.

“My friends, fellow actors, I feel good about what you’ve done — what you’re doing,” Gladstone began the English portion of her speech, after speaking briefly in her native Blackfoot language. “This has been a tough year for all of us. Those in this room, those not in this room, I’m so proud that we came here in solidarity with all of our other unions.”

“It’s truly a gift that we get to do this for a living. It’s a win. It was being here, it was being on set. It was telling stories,” she continued in part. “It’s so easy to distance yourself. It’s so easy to shut down, stop feeling, and we all bravely continue to feel, and that humanizes people. It brings people out of the shadows; it brings visibility.”

“Keep telling stories to everyone in this room, to everyone watching abroad. Those of you who are not actors but have a voice, have a story that needs to be heard,” she added. “Thank you to all the compassionate souls in this room and all the story tellers here tonight. Keep speaking your truths and keep speaking up for each other.”

Gladstone emerged as Martin Scorsese’s breakout star Killers of the Flower Moon as Osage woman Mollie Kyle, wife of Ernest Burkhart (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). The film is about the Osage murders committed by crime boss William Hale (played by Robert De Niro).

This year, the actress was the first Indian to win a Golden Globe, delivering her speech in her native Blackfoot language. She also earned a nomination at the Critics Choice Awards and became the first Indian woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Gladstone is the fourth Indigenous actress ever to receive a nomination in this category.

Mollie is based on a real woman who was a member of the Osage Nation. Members of her family, including her mother and sisters, were killed by men over their rights to oil reserves located beneath their reservation in Oklahoma. The movie can be streamed on Apple TV+.

Flower Moon was up for a total of three SAG categories, including for De Niro, 80, for supporting actor and outstanding performance by an ensemble.

IN NyadGladstone’s fellow nominee Bening, 65, plays real-life swimmer Diana Nyad in her attempts to swim the 110 miles from Cuba to Florida.

Critics praised both Bening and actress Jodie Foster, who plays Diana’s trainer Bonnie Stoll, for bringing the film to life and bringing Nyad’s story to life.

A four-time SAG Award nominee, Bening last won at the show in 1999 for American beauty. During the 2024 awards season, the actress received accolades at the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Along with Bening, Foster, 61, was up for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Supporting Role. (Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home the trophy, for her role in The Holdovers.)

Bradley Cooper asked Carey Mulligan to ‘bare their souls to each other’ in preparation for Maestro Roles

Two-time SAG nominee Mulligan, 38, received another nomination for her portrayal of actress Felicia Montealegre, the wife of composer Leonard Bernstein (played by Bradley Cooper, who also directed and co-wrote the film).

Mulligan’s performance as Montealegra earned her Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice and Oscar nominations.

She was previously nominated for a SAG Award for her role in the 2008 film Education and the 2020s A promising young woman.

Her Maestro co-star Cooper, 49, is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

Barbie earned Robbie, 33, her fourth SAG nomination. She starred as the titular iconic Mattel doll, leading the film as lead actress and producer to box office and critical success.

Robbie won a BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress. Her previous SAG nominations were in 2017 I, Tonyain 2018 Mary Queen of Scots and in 2019 Bomb.

At this year’s ceremony, Barbie leads the group with four nominations, tied with Oppenheimer. Costar Ryan Gosling was nominated for Supporting Actor, while the film’s rich slate competed for Outstanding Performance by a Cast and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.

WITH Poor peopleStone, 35, is winning his fourth SAG award.

In the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film, Stone’s Bella is a woman given a clean slate by a mad scientist through an experimental procedure. After that, he gradually discovers the wonders—and dangers—of the world. Her actors are Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.

Stone’s outstanding performance has already won her a Golden Globe, a Critics’ Choice Award and a BAFTA Award, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She last took home the SAG Award statuette for leading role in 2016 La la country.

The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aired live on Netflix on Saturday, February 24, at 8:00 PM ET, from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
