Career

After graduating in 1982, Lindsey joined the Bar Association as an officer and went on active duty the following year. He began his career as an Air Force defense attorney before being assigned to Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Frankfurt, Germany, as the Air Force’s senior prosecutor in Europe from 1984 to 1988. Lindsey defended an Air Force pilot accused of using marijuana in 1984. Serving service in Europe, returned to South Carolina and left active duty in 1989.

He then went into private practice as a lawyer. Lindsey served as an assistant district attorney in Oconee County from 1988 to 1992 and as a city attorney in Central from 1990 to 1994. He left the Air Force in 1989 and joined the South Carolina Air National Guard, serving until 1995. Lindsey later joined the US Air Force Reserves.

During the 1990-1991 Gulf War, Lindsey served as a judge advocate at McEntire Air National Guard Station in Eastover, South Carolina, where he helped familiarize departing pilots with the laws of war. In 1992, Lindsey was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives from Oconee County’s 2nd District. He also served only one term, from 1993 to 1995. Lindsey won election to the US Senate after longtime Senator Strom Thurmond announced his retirement in 2002.

Furthermore, Lindsey was only a junior state senator for two years, serving alongside Ernest Hollings, who retired in 2005. Lindsey defeated South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Buddy Witherspoon in his 2008 re-election bid. Lindsey defeated state Sen.
