The broadcaster was supported by her colleagues as she revealed her plans to have the operation next Friday.

Janet admitted the operation, which has a recovery time of between three and six months, left her feeling “scared” and “vulnerable”.

She said: “I’m finally going to have hip replacement surgery on Friday. And I can’t think about anything else.

“As I sit here, I’m shaking and my hands are ice cold. I keep shaking. I keep dreaming about it.

“When they cut me open, what’s going to come out? What if I can’t put it all back together?

“I’m just going to go into hospital on Friday, have surgery on Friday afternoon, stay in hospital for a few days and then I’ll really, really work on rehab and physio so I can get back as soon as possible.

“I’ll have to do one of those broadcasts from my phone hospital bed, I’ll see.”

Coleen Nolan noted that Janet mentioned how worried she was about the surgery backstage, an admission that left her close to tears.

Janet replied: “I’m vulnerable and, you know what, now it’s my own fault because I was told to do it in March, I put it off and put it off and put it off.

“And then, at the weekend, winter vegetables and plants were delivered to me, and despite my partner shouting at me ‘Don’t plant them’, I was on all fours on the ground pushing these little parsnips and things.

“And then, all Sunday morning, I couldn’t move. I just couldn’t move. And now I really messed up the other side of my back, so I had to lie down for two days.

“It dawned on me that, you know, I’ve let myself get too weak and I’ve never been like this before in my life, so it’s so irritating.”

Janet’s spirits soon lifted after she was surprised with a gift basket and a framed photograph of Coleen to mark her last day “briefly”.

In 2011, it was announced that Janet had joined Loose Women as a panellist.

Benefits of hip replacement explained

There are around 100,000 hip replacements each year with “very high success rates”, according to Professor Max.

He says: “Normally I would always try to manage someone’s condition without replacement, but if physiotherapy, steroid injections and activity modification are not enough, sometimes replacement is the best option.

“Warning signs to look out for would be patients with groin, buttock and leg pain, with pain at night and increasing stiffness.

“This can make it difficult to put on shoes and socks and cause the patient to limp when walking any distance.

“However, most patients who have a total hip replacement will regain a very good range of motion, allowing them to do more activities, such as sports, skiing, gym work, yoga, etc.”

If the patient is anxious because of any stigma, prof. Max begins by discussing their concerns with him.

He adds: “I explain the surgery and recovery, tell them the pros and cons, and explain the real benefits they can expect afterwards.

“I would explain the measures we take to reduce the risks, such as using robotic-assisted surgery for greater precision.

“We will occasionally introduce patients to similar people who have had replacements so they can hear from patients who have had it and whose lives have changed for the better.”

She is known on the show for her no-nonsense attitude and honest opinion.

Unlike some of the other judges, Janet has been a constant presence on the show since she joined in 2011.
