Love Is Blind’s Milton and Lydia on Navigating a 1,500-Mile Long-Distance Marriage: ‘We Really Miss Each Other’

Lydia Velez Gonzalez and Milton Johnson are facing a new challenge in their relationship now that they’re out of the pod and over.

Geologist, 32, gave Entertainment Weekly news about their marriage after Love is blind and shared that the two are now in a long-distance relationship while focusing on developing their careers.

“We’re very focused on our careers right now — I got a new job, he started a month ago, he has a new job, he’s been there for a year, but he actually just got transferred to Long Beach,” Lydia explained, adding. “We’re trying to get used to this new schedule and he’s also doing his MBA. He loves going to school, obviously, this is his second master’s degree. We’re just trying to really progress in our career.”

While Lydia lives in Houston, Milton, a 25-year-old petroleum engineer, lives in Long Beach, California, and the couple commutes back and forth to make their marriage work.

“We just miss him so much, so every second we spend together, we try to really cherish and try to be there as much as we can for each other when we’re actually in the same place,” Love is blind the alum said. “We’re limited right now. The challenge is just traveling in airports, I hate airports so much, but other than that, it’s been amazing.”

Lydia added: “We really miss him and it makes you love each other even more. It’s so good to have it here when you come home from work instead of being alone. He’s your best friend so obviously you want to see him all the time.”

Lydia and Milton left in season 5 Love is blind as a married couple after meeting and getting engaged in subs. Despite their trials and tribulations on the reality show, they confirmed they’re still in blissful wedlock almost a year and a half later in Sunday’s reunion special.

“I think in the past, before I met Lydia … I used to stay at work too late. Now it’s 5:30 and I’m like, ‘Hey, I’ve got to go home to my wife,'” Milton told co-hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey. “A few years ago, I could never have imagined that I would feel this way, be this way. It’s wonderful.”

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Lydia said she has no regrets about spending time experimenting with dating.

“No, I like being married,” she said. “I love my marriage. I am so happy today. And if everything I’ve done and said has led me to the same result, I’ll do it all over again in exactly the same way.”

“He’s amazing,” she continued. “He is a perfect boyfriend, but he loves me the most for who I am, the real me. And over time he has shown that he will defend me with everything [has] got it and he’ll have my back, no questions asked. And he never doubted[ed] who am I.”
