Fayaz Hussain Shah was born in Pakistan. Fayyaz Hussain Shah was commissioned as Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, Sindh Regiment after completing his training module at PMA. As he rose through the ranks, Shah held various positions including company commander, commanding officer (CO) and brigade commander. In February 2018, Fayaz Shah was promoted to the rank of major general and was subsequently appointed as the principal of the National Defense University (NDU) in Islamabad, Pakistan. In April 2018, he led a study team of 21 Pakistani Armed Forces officers from the National Defense University to Sri Lanka to hold a bilateral defense cooperation meeting with senior Sri Lankan Army officials.
Fayaz was later posted to Balochistan as Inspector General (IG) of Frontier Corps (FC) (North). There, he played a huge role in improving trade relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan by assisting the Balochistan government in establishing numerous trade terminals in insurgent-affected areas. As IG, he serves until 2021.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General by the army on October 11, 2022, and was subsequently posted to the General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi, as Inspector General (IG) (Arms). On May 12, 2023, he succeeded Lieutenant General Salman Fayyaz Ghani as the Commander-in-Chief (GOC) of the Fourth Army, also known as Lahore Army. Ghani was reportedly relieved of command of the Fourth Army for disobeying a direct order from General Asim Munir by not ordering Pakistan Army troops to open fire on protesters trying to enter the Lahore military camp.
