Manoj Kumar Katiyar is an Indian three-star general in the Indian Army. In July 2023, he made headlines when he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army-Western Command (GOC-in-C).

Manoj Kumar Katiyar was born in India. After completing his education at Sainik Ghorakhal School in Uttarakhand, he joined the National Defense Academy (NDA) in Pune, Maharashtra, where he underwent military training for three years. In 1985, he joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Uttarakhand and completed his military training in June 1986. Katiyar holds a Master’s degree in Defense and Management Studies from the National Defense College (NDC), New Delhi. In addition, he holds two master’s degrees in strategic studies, one from the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and another from the Defense Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington.

Manoj Kumar Katiyar joined the Indian Army in June 1986 as a Second Lieutenant in the 23rd Battalion, Rajput Regiment. Thereafter, he was posted to the Army War College, Mohau, Madhya Pradesh, where he completed the Young Officer (YO) course. As a major, he was appointed company commander of the battalion. As Colonel, Katiyar commanded his battalions at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir and Taksim in Arunachal Pradesh. He was then posted to Wellington as a lecturer at the Defense Staff College (DSSC). After being promoted to Brigadier General, Manoj Kumar Katiyar assumed command of the Infantry Brigade in Kashmir. Later, he was posted to Bhutan as an instructor in the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT). He served as the Associate Chief of Staff (BGS) at III Corps Headquarters and Central Command. After being promoted to Major General, he served as the Commanding Officer (GOC) of the 6th Infantry Division in Bareilly. Thereafter, he was posted to Army Headquarters, New Delhi as Chief of Staff (DG). Later, he was posted to Directorate of Military Operations, New Delhi. From April 5, 2021 to April 30, 2022, Katiyar was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian Army’s famous 1 Corps (also known as the Strike Corps) in the capacity of Lieutenant General. There, he succeeded Lieutenant General Codanda Poovaiah Cariappa as GOC.
In May 2022, he was appointed Director of Military Operations (DGMO); he will remain in office until June 2023.
On July 1, 2023, Manoj Kumar Katiyar was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief (GOC), Western Command, Haryana; he succeeds Vice Admiral Kumar Khanduri (Kumar Khanduri) serves as GOC.
