As soon as news of the attack broke, Singh volunteered to lead the Quick Response Team (QRT) to deal with the militants. After receiving the order from the Commanding Officer (CO), Singh rushed to the spot with his men. At the train station, he directed some troops to cordon off the area to prevent the militants from escaping. At 10:20 p.m., an armed man hiding under the stairs opened fire on a joint police and military team, injuring one policeman. Triveni quickly eliminated the militant and started looking for the other militant. He suffered gunshot wounds to the lower half of his face during an engagement with a second militant who was throwing grenades and firing an AK 47 on the flyover. Despite being seriously injured, Triveni managed to corner the militant and engaged him in hand-to-hand combat, eventually overpowering him. Triveni died while being taken to hospital for treatment. According to sources, when Triveni was admitted to the hospital, he was met by a senior Army commander who saluted the commander and said “mission accomplished sir”. In an interview, his father said of receiving the news of Triveni’s death:
I noticed a title scrolling at the bottom of the screen. Then they flashed a light and named the officer; that was my son, Lieutenant Triveni Singh. In my heart, I knew my son was dead. But I didn’t tell anyone. [After calling his unit] The officer on the other end said Triveni was fine. But I insisted on talking to his superiors. Within fifteen seconds of the action beginning, Triveni had achieved his target. “
