Lupita Nyong’o Attends 2024 Oscars in a Meaningful Armani Gown Inspired by a Look She Wore a Decade Ago

Lupita Nyong’o was one of the most glamorous guests at the 2024 Oscars — and she drew inspiration from her own style archives!

On Sunday, the 41-year-old actress — who was in her company A Quiet Place: Day One Costar Joseph Quinn — wore De Beers jewels and a custom-made dark red Armani Privé gown with lots of shimmering details (feathers! jewels! plunging necklines!).

However, what we were most excited about was the special meaning behind Nyong’o’s dazzling ensemble.

Here’s where the stars hold their Oscars

According to E! correspondent Zanni Roberts Rassi, the host’s icy ensemble is a nod to the fairy-tale light blue Prada gown she wore to the 2014 Oscars, when she won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 12 years of slavery.

N’yong’s stylist, Micaela, took to Instagram to recall the original dress worn 10 years ago.

“This woman, this dress and this moment completely changed the course of my career. There is so much to think about… so many behind the scenes moments and stories leading up to today. From a series of mood boards, sketches, samples, rigging and process . It’s been a journey,” Micaela wrote, ending her message by thanking N’yongo for giving her the opportunity to dress her.

N’yong’s glam look today also included a hairstyle that had “a lot of shine and texture” and accentuated N’yong’s beauty, her hairstylist Vernon François said in a press release. François’ goal: “to enhance her natural curls and ensure her look stayed flawless throughout the night using his favorite Matrix products.

Nyong’o isn’t afraid to take risks with her style, stepping out last year in custom-made armor for the 2023 Tony Awards. Pakistani artist and fashion designer Misha Japanwala created the silver armor for Nyong’o by casting and shaping it from her body.

The following month, Nyong’o wore a head-to-toe pastel Chanel look for Paris Fashion Week. She teamed the lavender tweed ensemble – a waistcoat adorned with silver buttons and a structured collar – with matching shorts.

Nyong’o’s big night in Hollywood comes after a recent trip to Mexico with new boyfriend Joshua Jackson. The actors were photographed in Puerto Vallarta while celebrating Nyong’s recent 41st birthday. Jackson, 45, and Nyong’o were first romantically linked in October 2023.

The 96th Academy Awards will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theater on Sunday, March 10, at 7:00 PM ET.
