Medical staff rushed to help the defender after he was examined by Cherries midfielder Philip Billing.

Manager Edwards also reacted quickly as he immediately ran onto the pitch.

The Englishman was seen waving to the players to give Lockyer space.

He could be seen telling players on both sides “away, away” to allow the medics to do their job.

Edwards’ quick thinking was noticed and praised by fans on social media.

One fan posted: “I couldn’t have asked for a better guy than Rob Edwards to run our football club, what a man.”

Another commented: “Big respect to Rob Edwards who ran onto the pitch and told the players to stand back while the medics did their job.”

A third wrote: “Top notch handling by Rob Edwards and the entire medical staff.”

A fourth said: “Rob Edwards deserves a lot of credit for the way he handled the Tom Lockyer situation.

“Straight onto the pitch to remove the Bournemouth and Luton Town players surrounding the incident so the medics could do their job. Rob Edwards, top class.”

A fifth hailed: “Watching the footage of Rob Edwards and I’m so proud to have him as our manager. A great, compassionate leader we’re lucky to have.”

‘RESPONSIVE’

Lockyer was taken to hospital and Luton Town confirmed he was conscious and responsive.

The club also confirmed in a statement that the defender suffered a cardiac arrest on the field.

It said: “Our medical staff confirmed the Hatters captain went into cardiac arrest on the pitch but was responsive by the time he was taken off on a stretcher.

“He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides.

“Tom has been taken to hospital, where we can assure fans he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support, care and loving messages for Locks.”

As a result of the incident, referee Simon Hooper stopped the game with the players in no mood to continue.

Before the medical emergency, Luton held Bournemouth to a 1-1 draw.

Elijah Adebayo stunned the fans when he settled the score in the first three minutes.

But Dominic Solanke struck to equalize after half-time.

Lockyer went down earlier in the year during the Hatter’s play-off final at Wembley.
