Biography/Wiki

MK Alagiri was born Muthuvel Karunanidhi Alagiri on January 30, 1951 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was born to politician M. Karunanidhi and his wife Dayalu Ammal. He was named after the Tamil writer Azhagirisamy, whose father was so impressed that he considered him his idol. He entered politics under the guidance of his father at an early age. His political career has been marked by many hardships and controversies.

He was born into a family of politicians in the Isai Villar community. His father M. Karunanidhi is the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu and his mother Dayalu Ammal is a businesswoman.

He grew up with three brothers, MK Muthu – an actor, singer and politician; MK Stalin – a politician; MK Tamilarasu – a film producer. He also has two sisters: Selvi Geetha Kovalam and Kanimozhi (politician).

His relationship with his father was not good as he always felt that Karunanidhi always favored his younger son MK Stalin. On December 10, 1972, he married Kanthi Alagiri. They have a son Dayanidhi Azhagiri and two daughters Kayalvizhi and Anjugaselvi.

Profession

Alagiri completed his education from Presidency College. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the university in his hometown of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is a famous politician and an outstanding social worker. He started working in politics at a very young age. He joined his father’s party DMK and became an important leader of the party.

In 1989, he did not hold any official position but took charge of everything in Madurai district. In 2008, he led his party to win three by-elections. Subsequently, he was appointed organizational secretary of the Southern Regional Party. In the 2009 general election, he won from the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency and became a cabinet minister. He served as Cabinet Secretary for Chemicals and Fertilizers. But on January 24, 2014, he was dismissed as a member and secretary of the DMK party.

  • He was accused of murdering former DMK minister T. Kiruttinan on May 20, 2003. He was arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder due to an intra-party conflict between the two men. In May 2008, he was acquitted by the main district court and the district court.
  • During his tenure as Cabinet Minister of Chemistry and Industry, the opposition raised questions about his presence in Parliament, as the Ministry’s State Minister Jena represented Alagiri in answering all questions raised by the Parliament.
  • In May 2007, the “Dinakaran” newspaper published the results of an opinion poll. Stalin received 70% of the support, while Alagiri received only 2%. This further deepened the already discord between the two brothers. This caused great outrage and supporters of Alagiri attacked the Madurai office of Dinakaran newspaper and set it on fire.
  • In 2011, his wife allegedly purchased the land for Rs 85 lakh, while the actual value was Rs 20 crore. In September 2011, his wife was cleared of all charges.
  • In January 2013, Jena accused Alagiri of doing nothing to prevent fertilizer companies from abusing government subsidies. Jena said Alagiri did not respond to five letters he wrote to him.
  • In 2013, he was embroiled in another controversy when he did not accompany the TR Baalu-led emergency operation and tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister’s Office on March 20, 2013 and submitted his resignation letter to the President. He allegedly postponed his term. The resignation was in protest against his father’s decision to withdraw from central ministry, and some sources said he was upset because he was not informed when the decision was made.
