According to witnesses, a few minutes before the accident there was hail with “two inches of ice” on the roads.

The entire roadway was reported to be covered in debris.

Vans, cars and a minibus were seen overturned and lying on their sides.

An ambulance was at the scene of the accident, and several injured people were walking around the scene of the accident.

Eyewitness Siena was driving with her boyfriend at the time and told The Sun: “It was raining heavily and then all of a sudden the road was full of ice.

“My boyfriend braked and a bunch of cars stopped, we skidded a bit.

“Then I just saw smoke and cars driving through the debris, there were cars overturned on their sides, people crawling out of cars.

“There were several cars where people were huddled together, it was obvious that someone was injured.

“We were passing by a few minutes after it happened. We saw overturned vans and taxis.

“There were injured people, people in shock, people crying, people waiting for help.

“Definitely every car is quite damaged. There were about 100 meters of cars everywhere.

“We were in shock. Everyone was. It was hard to watch. Most of the cars had airbags deployed, and they had a lot of damage. The roads were covered in ice.

“I saw a van that had its entire front window smashed and was off the car.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said earlier this evening: “The M23 is closed in both directions between J10 and J11 following a collision involving around 15 vehicles.

“The ambulance was called at 5:40 p.m., and the ambulance is treating several victims.

“Please avoid the area and expect disruption. Thank you for your patience.”

In the news, a spokesman said: “The southbound carriageway of the M23 has reopened following a multi-vehicle collision.

“Junctions 10 and 11 to the north remain closed.

“Approximately 34 people are receiving emergency treatment, with non-life threatening injuries. Please continue to avoid the area.”

Roger Williams told ITV Meridian: “More than 30 vehicles must have been smashed.

“The vans are on the side, the minibus is upside down.

“I counted five facing the wrong way after the U-turn, but the entire roadway is covered in debris.

“There was a storm with hail. The road was covered with two inches of ice and people were rushing through it.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed: “We are currently in attendance at an RTC involving multiple vehicles between junctions 10 and 11 of the M23 at Pease Pottage. Please avoid the area.”

“The M23 northbound carriageway north of junction 11 is closed. Find alternative routes,” the spokesman wrote in an update.

Delays have also now been reported on the A2011 as motorists avoid the scene.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We remain at the scene of a multi-vehicle RTC on the M23 between junctions 10 and 11.

“We are assessing and treating multiple victims and are urging people to avoid the area.”
